Cardiff 2-3 Crystal Palace: Bluebirds RELEGATED to the Championship following defeat to Eagles

Cardiff have been relegated to the Championship following a 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

Neil Warnock’s men needed to win their final two matches to have a chance of overtaking Brighton, who enjoyed a four-point advantage and a far superior goal difference heading into the penultimate weekend.

But clinical Palace played the familiar role of executioners as Wilfried Zaha, Michy Batshuayi and Andros Townsend scored, with Cardiff replying through a Martin Kelly own goal and Bobby Reid’s stoppage-time strike.

Cardiff, as has so often been the case this season, were not short of commitment and energy, just a lack of quality, which has been their undoing this season.

Against opponents, who have incredibly won nine times on the road compared to four at Selhurst Park this season, they were brutally punished, with Zaha at his brilliant best.

Ironically Zaha, a former Bluebird loanee, was on the pitch the last time Cardiff were relegated from the top flight five years ago, alongside Aron Gunnarsson, who was playing his final home game for the club after eight years and over 280 games.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan had made a rare visit to the Welsh capital and he saw his side come close to taking the lead within 40 seconds.

Josh Murphy’s drive from distance dipped devilishly to strike a post, but Cardiff’s momentum was slowed when the influential Victor Camarasa hobbled off after 10 minutes with what appeared to be a dead leg.

Palace began to stroke the ball around with confidence and Zaha fired into the side netting as he began to torment his marker Lee Peltier.

Cardiff failed to heed the warning as Zaha took Townsend’s return pass and planted a low shot into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

It took the Palace winger into double figures for the season, with nine of his 10 league goals coming away from home.

Cardiff were level within three minutes when substitute Leandro Bacuna broke on to Reid’s pass and down the right to deliver a cross.

It should not have a posed a problem to Palace, but the hapless Kelly diverted the ball into an empty net after the goalkeeper Vicente Guaita had gambled that the ball would reach him.

Warnock said he was proud of his team after they were relegated

“Martin Kelly, he wants Brighton down,” sang the Palace fans mischievously, keen to see their great rivals rather than Cardiff go down.

It was a lifeline for Cardiff, but Zaha was intent on cutting the cord. Zaha and Luka Milivojevic combined well and Batshuayi drove home after he had played a clever one-two with Jordan Ayew.

Guaita saved from Bruno Ecuele Managa and Reid as Cardiff again responded well to falling behind, but Etheridge prevented Batshuayi’s point-blank header from extending the lead.

Murphy made a horrible mess of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s cross after the break and Kelly blocked another attempt from the winger as Cardiff pressed frantically.

Reid then slipped Kenneth Zohore clean through, but the substitute’s shot was kept out by Guaita.

Andros Townsend celebrates his fine strike

Cardiff paid the price for those missed chances when Townsend drove from the halfway line, cut inside Joe Bennett and beat Etheridge from 20 yards via the near post.

Mendez-Laing provided further proof that it was not to be Cardiff’s day, or season for that matter, when he failed to beat James McArthur on the goal-line and saw Guaita push another effort on to the post.

Reid fired home a beauty at the death but Cardiff were down, as Palace added them to Hull, Stoke and Huddersfield as sides they have relegated in recent seasons.

Arsene Wenger EXCLUSIVE: All-English European cup finals due to ‘ageing squads’ of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich

Arsene Wenger believes the ‘collapse of the traditionally strong European teams’ is behind England’s domination of the Champions League and Europa League this season.

Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea have made history this year by taking all four final places in Europe’s two major competitions.

It is the first time all four finalists in the Champions League and Europa League have come from one nation.

Liverpool are through to the Champions League final for the second season running

It’s been perhaps the most thrilling season of European competition ever.

Liverpool and Tottenham have both staged miracle comebacks to reach the European Cup final in Madrid, with the Reds beating Barcelona in the semis and Spurs beating Ajax.

Ajax, meanwhile, had previously knocked out both Juventus and Real Madrid before losing to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Chelsea and Arsenal’s places in the final have been less surprising. They were two of the strongest teams in the competition, after all, but they have been made to work hard for their final spots.

And Wenger believes he knows the secret behind the English clubs’ success – their rivals are not as strong as they once were.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface, the legendary Arsenal boss said: “First of all I believe in England people work well.

“Secondly it’s a consequence of dominant financial power of the English clubs and basically, as well, the collapse of traditionally strong European teams.

“When I say collapse, it’s Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus – why? Because the players who made the difference in all these clubs have aged, and are not in the position anymore to make that difference.

“The dominant players at Bayern Munich were Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben and today they don’t have the physical potential to do it.

Robben and Ribery have been at Bayern Munich for 10 years and 12 years, respectively, winning numerous titles

Robben and Ribery have been at Bayern Munich for 10 years and 12 years, respectively, winning numerous titles

“It’s the same at Barcelona, who have lost players like Xavi and Inesta, Real Madrid have lost Ronaldo, at Juventus Giorgio Chiellini is aging and Gigi Buffon is not there anymore.

“So it’s the simultaneous strength of England and the collapse of the other big dominant forces before, who will now be on the market.

“What I can promise you, is that we will have a very interesting transfer period, an interesting battle, this summer.”

It’s been a year since Wenger ended his 22-year spell in charge of Arsenal and, having yet to return to the game, his future plans have dominated the headlines in recent weeks.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he vowed to return to football ‘soon’ but was coy in what capacity.

The veteran Frenchman, who insists he still has the desire to compete, has been linked with jobs in management and at boardroom level across Europe, including French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

“I am a competitor first, I live for competition and I will be back in football soon,” Wenger added.

“That’s a promise.

“In what way, I don’t know, but I will be back.”

New Tottenham stadium: Opening game against Crystal Palace ‘won’t be a party’ for Spurs stars, warns former captain Michael Dawson

New Tottenham stadium: Opening game against Crystal Palace ‘won’t be a party’ for Spurs stars, warns former captain Michael Dawson

Tottenham have been warned they ‘can’t just turn up and enjoy the party’ in the opening game at their new stadium against Crystal Palace.

The wait is almost over the players and fans, as Spurs will kick off a new era in their newly-built £1billion home ground on Wednesday night.

And former club captain Michael Dawson insists this is a must-win game for Spurs, stressing the need for the players to block the occasion out of their minds and concentrate on claiming a vital three points.

Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium officially opens on Wednesday

Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium officially opens on Wednesday

It promises to be an exciting night for the north Londoners, but their preparations for the historic game have not been ideal.

Tottenham have gone five games without victory in the Premier League, a horrible run of form which has erased their previously comfortable hold on a top-four spot.

And while fans will be in the mood to party when they enter the gates of their new home, the players have been given a stark warning that they must not do the same.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Sports Breakfast, Dawson said: â€Å“It’s going to be an amazing night, a special night, but Tottenham can’t just think they’re going to turn up and win.

â€Å“It’s a great night for the Crystal Palace players too. They’re going to be excited about playing at a brand new stadium.

â€Å“It’s going to be an incredible atmosphere with a lot of excitement, but they’ve got to realise they can’t just turn up and think it’s going to be a party and enjoy it – they’ve got to go there and perform, because they need the three points badly!”

Sunday’s narrow defeat to Liverpool has seen Spurs slip to fourth place, level on points with Manchester United in fifth and only one point above Chelsea in sixth.

Claiming their first win in six Premier League matches would see them climb back above rivals Arsenal into third – and Dawson says they have no time to get comfortable to their new surroundings.

â€Å“You thought they were was guaranteed a Champions League place, about six weeks ago they were about ten points clear up there, but after picking up one point from 15, it’s made it really tight,” he added.

It’s make-or-break time for Tottenham’s top-four bid

2

It’s make-or-break time for Tottenham’s top-four bid

â€Å“So they don’t have time to find their feet, they have to hit the ground running. It can take time when a club moves to a new stadium, but Spurs don’t have that time.

â€Å“If they do, they’re going to be out of the top four and not in the Champions League.

â€Å“But, I’m confident they have enough quality to win tonight and get the three points.”

Premier League giants Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United would be hit hardest by ‘Hard Brexit’

Brexit continues to be a major talking point in UK politics.

But how would the UK’s complete withdrawal from the European Union affect the Premier League?

The study, aptly named Brexit Effect by Free Super Tips, reveals the impact clubs would face if a ‘Hard Brexit’ was in place and freedom of movement was restricted, forcing the clubs to stop buying players from EU member states.

The Premier League has plenty of foreign stars, with Sergio Aguero a huge success story for Manchester City

An incredible £725million in tax from Premier League players would have disappeared from UK shores, if Brexit had hit after the vote on June 23, 2016 and the league been forced to manage without EU players.

The research looks at wages, transfers and results without EU players and what this would mean to the UK economy in this scenario.

Chelsea are the Premier League’s biggest contributors to the economy with largest wages for EU players, the club’s EU-based squad have been taxed £99.2m since the start of the 2016/17 season.

The Blues are followed by Manchester United in second with £74.9m, Manchester City with £70.7m, Arsenal (£53.1m) and Southampton (£48.5m).

Chelsea’s reliance on EU-based players has seen them taxed £99.2m since the start of the 2016/17 season

2

Chelsea’s reliance on EU-based players has seen them taxed £99.2m since the start of the 2016/17 season

Although the majority of the most-taxed EU players come from the top six clubs, this season throws up a few interesting findings with Everton̢۪s tax bill the highest for EU squad members.

PREMIER LEAGUE TAX BILLS FOR EU PLAYERS

These are the sides who would pay the most tax...

  1. Everton – £37.3million

  2. Chelsea – £32.1million

  3. Brighton and Hove Albion – £30million

  4. Manchester City – £29.4million

  5. Newcastle United – £12.2 million

Brexit’s impact would also be heavily felt in the transfer market with Premier League clubs spending more than £2.1bn on players from EU countries over the last three seasons.

Once again, it’s Chelsea who will feel the greatest impact from a hard Brexit with the Blues banking £290.5m, with City the second-highest spending club having an extra £280.5m, followed by Man United (£235m), Everton (£158.4m) and Arsenal (£155.9m).

Philippe Coutinho set for Barcelona exit? Spanish giants ‘would discuss €80m bids’ for ex-Liverpool star this summer

Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho could leave Barcelona in a cut-price deal this summer, just 18 months after joining the club for £142million.

According to reports, the LaLiga champions are ready to listen to offers for the Brazilian star who has struggled to make an impact since arriving at the Nou Camp.

2

It has not gone to plan for Coutinho since his move to Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018

It is sensationally claimed Barcelona would be willing to take a significant loss to get him off their books, and would discuss offers starting at just €80m (£68.8m).

Coutinho was a key man in a Liverpool shirt, and was one of the Premier League̢۪s top talents during his time in England.

He was expected to play a big part in the Barcelona team, but it hasn̢۪t quite worked out for the 26-year-old in Spain.

The playmaker has nine goals and five assists this season. He started 16 games and made ten substitute appearances in the league, but hasn’t completed a full 90 minutes since January.

The reports of a possible exit will surely have Liverpool fans hoping for a dream return to Anfield, but that is reportedly not on the cards.

Manchester United have also been linked with an interest in the Brazil international but, according to Goal, Coutinho is unlikely to consider a move back to the Premier League after his family̢۪s struggle to adapt to life in England.
