Teemu Pukki: What those in the know have said about the Norwich City star who was labelled a flop at Celtic

Teemu Pukki has been one of the standout players in the Championship this season.

The forward has an astonishing 27 goals and nine assists for Norwich City, putting the Canaries on course for promotion to the Premier League, with a seven point cushion over third place Sheffield United.

Pukki can even end the campaign with more goals than Bolton Wanderers, who are just two ahead on 29.

The 29-year-old has had a journeyman career that has, previously, not lived up to the hype that surrounded him as a teenager.

Sevilla signed the Finland international as an 18-year-old from his hometown club KTP in 2008.

After two years, and just one appearance, he decided to return to Finland for HJK Helsinki.

Pukki scored 18 goals in 34 games and earned a move back to one of Europe̢۪s top five leagues.

He signed for Schalke on a three-year deal but struggled in the Bundesliga with just eight goals in 47 games.

A move to the Scottish Premiership with Celtic followed next and again was not prolific.

He hit nine goals in 37 games and won the Scottish Premiership in the 2013/14 season.

The forward was loaned to Danish side Brondby for the 2014/15 season and it was later made permanent.

It was in the Danish Superliga where he rediscovered his goalscoring touch and netted 69 times in 161 games.

Sevilla – 0 goals in 1 game

Schalke – 8 goals in 47 games

Celtic – 9 goals in 37 games

Brondby – 69 goals in 161 games

Norwich – 28 goals in 42 games

Norwich picked him up on a free-transfer in June 2018 and has gone on to fire them to the brink of promotion and was named as the Championship̢۪s Player of the Year.

The man himself was a little sceptical of joining the second tier of English football at the time.

He told The Guardian: â€Å“I thought it was all long balls. I would say we play football.

â€Å“We want to play from behind, with passing. There’s a lot of movements, a lot of running from the guys and a lot of short passing. And we are creating a lot of chances, something that’s really important for me.”

But what do others make of Pukki?

Celtic manager Neil Lennon

â€Å“Listen, he is not going to turn into Superman just because he has got a move to Brondby,” he said after Pukki moved to Brondby. â€Å“He still has the same attributes; good feet, okay with his back to goal and he will go in behind as well.

â€Å“He has never been the most physical of players, he was never that type. He will be a similar sort of player as what you saw at Celtic but maybe a bit more comfortable in the Scandinavian environment.

â€Å“He is a quiet boy. He had a few injury problems as well and at a club like Celtic, when you’re brought in for money, you have to score goals.

â€Å“And he wasn’t really an out-and-out goalscorer. He played within himself a little bit, I thought. He didn’t really show his capabilities.”

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

â€Å“Pukki’s skills are not common in English football,” he said before the two sides played earlier season. â€Å“He’s a player who is hard to neutralise, he is always in good positions to receive the ball and makes many movements.

â€Å“He deserves all the compliments and the spotlight because he has been outstanding”, Farke said to the Eastern Daily Press.

“He doesn’t care so much about himself or his individual record but to work for this group and lads.

â€Å“You only shine as an individual if you are successful as a team.

“Even if he did not score in the last eight league games but we are successful as a team I am pretty sure he will be happy.”

Former Finland manager Mixu Paatelainen

â€Å“Can he score in the Premier League? For me, yes,” he said. â€Å“He is a quick player who likes to run in behind, so he is made for counter-attacking tactics.

â€Å“I would assume that if Norwich manage to go up this year Daniel (Farke) will stick with him and he will be very useful for counter-attacking tactics.

â€Å“He is certainly not fazed by playing against big teams. He scored against Spain for us, when we drew away in a World Cup qualifier. So he can score on big occasions, no question at all.

â€Å“His pace and ability allows him to do that. He plays on that last shoulder.

â€Å“Teemu has always been very light on his feet, always very capable of getting in behind defences. His instincts inside the box are sound and he has always been a very good finisher. So I am not surprised at all he is doing so well.”

Lionel Messi scores winner against Levante to secure Barcelona their eighth LaLiga title in 11 seasons

Lionel Messi fittingly scored the goal which ensured Barcelona retained their LaLiga title.

The Argentina international was rested for the first half of Saturday’s clash with Levante as coach Ernesto Valverde had one eye on next week’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

But he was introduced at the start of the second half and went on to net the winner – his 34th league goal of another outstanding season.

With three matches remaining, a nine-point lead over Atletico Madrid and a superior head-to-head, an eighth title in 11 years was secured, although amazingly it was the first time since 2010 they had clinched it at the Nou Camp.

They remain on track for a third treble since 2009 with the Copa del Rey final against Valencia next month.

However, it was far from straightforward against opponents who belied their position just three points clear of the relegation zone with a bold display which could, and probably should, have earned them a point.

Philippe Coutinho looked to be giving that little bit extra with a visit from his former club on the horizon and he could have had a first-half hat-trick as Barca’s best chances fell to him.

The best by far was a 25th-minute free header eight yards out which he directed straight at Aitor Fernandez, having seconds earlier failed to properly test the goalkeeper when finding space on the left of the penalty area.

Coutinho also hit the crossbar with a free-kick having taken responsibility off another ex-Red Luis Suarez, who was first to test Fernandez with a shot on the run he took early to catch out his opponent only to see his effort turned behind.

Messi replaced Coutinho for the start of the second half and was soon into his stride, although a run and low shot was comfortable for Fernandez, while Ivan Rakitic bent a shot just wide.

There was, however, only one man who was going to score the goal which retained the title and in the 62nd minute Messi struck, controlling Arturo Vidal’s header with one touch back onto his left foot before placing a shot beyond Fernandez and inside the far post.

But Levante’s confident performance up to that point had proved they had not come to the Nou Camp to wave through Barca’s title coronation and substitute Jose Luis Morales should have scored when he out-paced the defence but he blazed over.

Despite the lead Barcelona were far from convincing, offering hope to Liverpool they can nick a crucial away goal or two next week, and in the last minute another substitute Enis Bardhi hit the post to almost spoil the party.

Renee Hector: Tottenham Ladies defender victim of racist abuse on social media since reporting Sophie Jones’ abuse

Women in Football has condemned the racist abuse directed at Tottenham Ladies player Renee Hector on social media.

Hector, the defender, has been the victim of attacks since she reported Sophie Jones, the Sheffield United forward, for racially abusing her during a match in January.

Renee Hector (L) was allegedly racially abused by Sophie Jones

Jones was banned for five matches last week after being found guilty of racially abusing Hector, and she immediately decided to retire from football.

Hector has since been ‘victimised’ on social media, Kick It Out’s Troy Townsend revealed last week.

In a statement, Women in Football said: “Women in Football wishes to express disgust at the disgraceful and wholly unacceptable racial abuse directed at Renee Hector of Tottenham Ladies on social media.

“We would like to commend Renee for calling out the racial abuse she received while playing for Spurs against Sheffield United, and the prompt action taken by the relevant governing bodies and club.

“However, the targeting of Renée on social media, along with other players who have spoken out in recent times, is an issue that must be urgently addressed.

“There is no place for racism, sexism, homophobia or any other form of discrimination in our game and society.”

It is alleged Jones made monkey noises towards Hector, with Sheffield United sacking her after the guilty verdict.

Jones insists she is innocent, and appeared to slam the Football Association as a governing body she ‘does not have any confidence in’.

â€Å“I would like to state on record that I do not condone racism in any form and I will continue to stand by this statement,” Jones said.

â€Å“I strongly stand firm that I am not guilty with regards to the charge that the FA have brought against me.”

“I am struggling to come to terms with this decision and how The FA can come to a verdict based on probability from the two witness accounts verbally given, instead of reviewing the case and its evidence, in its entirety, based on the Sport Law and Practice Second Edition stating ‘the more serious the allegation the greater degree of satisfaction required’.”

Departing PFA chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT: ‘I NEVER had my eyes on Gordon Taylor’s job’

Departing PFA chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT: ‘I NEVER had my eyes on Gordon Taylor’s job’

Ben Purkiss has insisted his call for an independent review of the Professional Footballers̢۪ Association was never about his desire to usurp Gordon Taylor as chief executive.

Purkiss, the current PFA chairman, joined talkSPORT on Thursday to discuss the news that Taylor will step down after 38 years in charge when independent review of the union’s work and governance has been completed.

Taylor has faced criticism in recent years over his running of the organisation and his reported £2.3million wages.

Gordon Taylor pictured outside the PFA’s Manchester offices in 1991

2

Gordon Taylor pictured outside the PFA’s Manchester offices in 1991

Since being appointed chairman in November 2017, Purkiss has clashed with Taylor over the PFA̢۪s direction and the 74-year-old̢۪s future in the role and, at Wednesday̢۪s annual general meeting, it was confirmed a review would take place.

But it was also revealed that, along with Taylor, chairman Purkiss and the rest of the union̢۪s 13-strong management committee will also stand down when it is completed.

Serious questions have since been raised about why the man behind this much-needed reform has been forced out of his job.

And the right-back, who most recently played for Port Vale and Swindon Town, joined talkSPORT host Jim White on Thursday to have his say.

â€Å“People questioned my motivation for taking the stance that I did,” said the 34-year-old.

â€Å“I was asked the question whether I had my eye on £2.3million, and I certainly did not.

â€Å“I’m more than happy to agree to that [stepping down as well as Taylor] if it allays those fears and makes everyone have more confidence in me, in what I’m doing and how the review is going to progress.

â€Å“I want to see the review through and make sure there is someone there who can lead the evolution at the PFA.

â€Å“I don’t want to be seen to be trying to implement things for my own gain. It’s never been about me looking at how I can cement my role and position within the organisation, it’s been about trying to represent the members and do my best for players throughout the leagues.

â€Å“If it is a price to pay, then that’s fine, but I genuinely believe I’m trying to do my best in the role.”

Ben Purkiss, pictured playing for Port Vale in 2016

2

Ben Purkiss, pictured playing for Port Vale in 2016

It has been confirmed that none of the members on the outgoing committee will be able to apply for senior roles at the PFA for five years.

However, Purkiss refused to rule out running for chief executive one day and even offered his support to whoever is selected to succeed Taylor in the role.

â€Å“Obviously I would love to stay within the game in some capacity and I’d like to think I can influence and help players in particular,” he added.

â€Å“The chief exec job? You would never categorically rule that out, but at the moment the forefront of my mind is making sure I do this job properly and that we really get substantive change at the end of the review.

â€Å“I have invested a lot in the PFA.  I massively believe in players and the support they need and hopefully I will leave a legacy and give the PFA a real platform to build on.

â€Å“If an incoming chief exec wishes to draw on my experience or wants my assistance, I would obviously more than happy to assist in any way I possibly could.

â€Å“But if that’s not as chairman, that’s absolutely fine.”

Patrick Vieira has impressed in his early managerial career

He had previously coached at Manchester City and spent over two years in charge of MLS club New York City.

Last month, Wenger, who joined the Gunners at the same time as Vieria in 1996, praised his former captain for constructing his career ‘intelligently and patiently’ and sees the 42-year-old returning to Arsenal one day.

Vieira said: “I’m really privileged to have worked under Arsene and him saying that is really flattering.

“If I manage Arsenal one day I will take him for dinner and I will pay the bill!

“He didn’t say it to put pressure (on me). It’s just flattering that the guy who spent over 20 years there thinks I have the quality to manage a big club like Arsenal one day.”

Vieira played for Cannes and AC Milan before moving to Arsenal, where he won three Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

He joined Juventus in 2005 and went on to feature for Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Vieira, who was linked with succeeding Wenger last summer before Unai Emery was appointed Arsenal manager, revealed he would ‘love’ to manage one of his former clubs.

He said: “Since I was in Manchester City I had a clear idea about the next step for me.

“Moving from City to New York in the MLS and then coming back to the French league was the right decision.

“I have a clear idea of what I want to achieve, and I will try to take the right decision to get to the top.

“I want to take my time to get there, but I would love one day to manage one of the teams I played for in Italy or England.

“When you have an exciting league like in England, you always want to get involved. But I don’t put a time on it, because my work will decide if I deserve it or not. That is what will dictate if I deserve this kind of job.”

Bolton Wanderers news: Player strike over unpaid wages ‘fully supported’ by the PFA, chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT

Professional Footballers’ Association chairman Ben Purkiss has told talkSPORT the trade union ‘fully supports’ Bolton players over their decision to strike.

It is unclear if in-crisis club will play their final two games of the season against Brentford and Nottingham Forest after Trotters players went on strike over unpaid wages.

Bolton stars boycotted Saturday̢۪s clash against Brentford, leading to the game being postponed. The EFL have ordered the club to complete their remaining games and it is yet unclear what sanctions the club will face if they fail to do so.

Wanderers defender Andy Taylor told talkSPORT on Tuesday he and his team-mates decided to ‘take a stand’ as they still await their wages for March and April.

The team have come under fire in some quarters over the decision, but PFA chairman Purkiss insists the call to strike was a ‘collective stance’ between the players and their union.

â€Å“We’ve been there throughout,” said the PFA chief, whose organisation offered financial aid to players when they were also not paid by Bolton in December.

â€Å“This has been long-running and the players have reached the point where they have no other option.

â€Å“This had taken a real toll on the players’ mental health, their well-being and that of their families and we’re trying to support them.

â€Å“No one wants to see the situation in the state that it is, with games not being played, but the players have been through so much.

â€Å“We’ve been there and we support what they do. This is a collective stance, Andy Taylor and the Bolton players are not on their own.”
