Burnley vs Manchester City: What Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp text Ashley Barnes ahead of vital clash in title race

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told Ashley Barnes he ‘might sign’ the Burnley striker should he score against the Reds’ title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

The Anfield faithful are hoping the Clarets do them a favour this afternoon, with City returning to the top of the Premier League table if they win at Turf Moor.

Any other result would keep Liverpool in first place heading into the penultimate round of fixtures, moving the Reds even closer to ending their 29-year title drought.

Much of Liverpool’s hope of City dropping points against Burnley rests on Barnes, the forward.

He has a great scoring record against the Premier League’s big six – having netted against each of them for Burnley – and the 29-year-old knows how much it would mean if he could deny Pep Guardiola’s side a vital win.

“I know what winning the league means,” Barnes told the Daily Mail. “All of us would go down in Liverpool history if we helped them out against City.”

Barnes revealed he has even been contacted by Klopp ahead of Sunday’s clash, with a text message egging him on against City.

“Jurgen Klopp has even sent a sly text to say if I score he might sign me for next season,” he added.

In next week’s penultimate round of fixtures Liverpool take on Newcastle while Man City host Leicester, managed by former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

Meanwhile the final day sees City travel to Brighton as Wolves visit Anfield to take on Klopp’s title chasers.
