Lionel Messi goal vs Getafe is best in Barcelona’s history, according to fans

Lionel Messi’s mesmerising run and goal against Getafe is the best in Barcelona’s history, according to fans.

The strike in the semi-finals of the 2006/07 Copa del Rey, which Getafe actually won, achieved 45 per cent of the vote in a competition in which more than 500,000 supporters have voted since December.

Messi’s goal against Getafe in 2007 has been likened to the one Diego Maradona scored against England at the World Cup in 1986

The final result saw Messi take the top three spots, with Sergi Roberto’s one against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 coming in fourth.

That capped an incredible and crazy Champions League turnaround when Barca won the second leg 6-1 – Roberto scoring the sixth – to seal a place in the quarter-final, having been 4-0 down from the first leg.

In August 1997, Dennis Bergkamp had the Goal of the Season competition all to himself, with this strike against Leicester also winning Goal of the Season

It brings back memories of the time Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp won first, second and third in the Match of the Day Goal of the Month competition in August 1997, the only time this has ever been done.

His strike against Leicester that month actually won Goal of the Season.

Over in Spain, Messi’s effort against Athletic Club in the 2015 Copa del Rey final was second with 28 per cent of the vote, while his one against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the 2011 Champions League semi-final had 16 per cent.

Roberto’s goal against PSG received 11 per cent.

Jan Vertonghen injury: Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino unable to confirm whether defender will be fit for Bournemouth clash

Mauricio Pochettino is still unable to confirm if Jan Vertonghen will be able to play against Bournemouth after the Tottenham defender’s worrying head injury.

Vertonghen, the Belgium international, was withdrawn from Spurs’ Champions League semi-final first leg defeat by Ajax on Tuesday after clashing heads with centre-back partner Toby Alderweireld.

The 32-year-old saw a neurologist on Thursday to discover the extent of the injury, though Pochettino remains in the dark ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to the south coast.

The Spurs manager said: “Today was his appointment with the specialist and we still haven’t seen the report.

“After the game was good, he was more relaxed and felt better. Now we need to see the report from the specialist.

“We don’t know [if he can face Bournemouth], we need to wait. That is going to be a decision from the medical staff. We cannot guess now.

“We hope it is not a big issue and he is available soon.”

The handling of Vertonghen’s injury has been criticised and Pochettino said he was open to a change in football’s concussion protocol rules.

‘Send Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to the airport in the same taxi!’ – Ex-Manchester United striker Alan Brazil fumes over headlines

‘Send Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to the airport in the same taxi!’ – Ex-Manchester United striker Alan Brazil fumes over headlines

Alan Brazil has told Manchester United to ‘send Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to the airport in the same taxi’ this summer.

The talkSPORT host and former United striker is ‘sick’ of seeing the duo constantly in the media and believes they should be sold when the transfer window opens.

Pogba’s face was all over the back pages of Friday’s newspapers in England, with claims he is ‘tearing apart’ the Red Devils’ dressing room and that his agent cancelled a meeting to discuss his future at the club.

Pogba is seen by some as a disruptive influence at Man United

2

Pogba is seen by some as a disruptive influence at Man United

Meanwhile, Lukaku was also headline news after telling Italian press it would be a ‘dream’ to play in Serie A and hopes to move there ‘sooner or later’.

Both stories have emerged in a grim time for United, who are currently suffering their worst run of results in more than 50 years after seven defeats from their last nine games.

And Mr Brazil has had enough of the negative press surrounding his former club, and the players behind it.

Speaking on Friday’s Sports Breakfast, the Scot said: â€Å“I’m sick of this. I pick up the papers and we get it again – Pogba and Lukaku.

â€Å“Now, I’m trying my hardest and with United’s woes I don’t want to keep picking on two players, but we’re getting it again and again and again!

â€Å“If he wants to go, just get rid of him! Take him to the airport and get rid, I’m sick of it!

â€Å“United fans came on the show yesterday and said: ‘That’s it, I’m off. I’m not renewing my season ticket, I don’t care, I’ve been a supporter for 30 years and enough is enough. I’m not doing it next season’.

â€Å“They’ll pick up the paper this morning and say *slams fist on table* ‘that’s it’. If they were having second thoughts before, their season ticket’s in the bin now.

â€Å“It’s a disgrace. The back pages are all about Pogba and his agent, and Lukaku saying he wants to go to Italy.

â€Å“United, save some money and put both of them in the taxi and take them to the airport!”

Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona was ‘even more embarrassing’ than Manchester United’s 3-0 loss at the Nou Camp earlier this season.

Liverpool have been left with a lot to do in the second leg at Anfield

Liverpool have got a mountain to climb to reach their second successive Champions League final, after they were beaten by a Lionel Messi-inspired Barca in the first leg of their semi-final clash.

The Reds were in the ascendancy for most of the game, dominating possession on large periods at the stadium where the home side̢۪s ball retention usually reigns supreme.

Masterful Messi was ultimately the difference.

Trailing by former No.7 Luis Suarez’s first-half goal, Liverpool looked the more likely to score for the majority of the match until the 75th minute, when Messi pounced on a rebound and then scored a sublime free-kick – his 600th Barcelona goal – to make it 3-0.

Messi proved once again why he is one of the best ever – he was unstoppable against Liverpool

2

Messi proved once again why he is one of the best ever – he was unstoppable against Liverpool

It was the same scoreline which saw arch rivals Manchester United dumped out of the competition in the previous round, and Red Devils supporter Goldstein wasted little time in rubbing the salt in the wounds of Liverpool fans after the final whistle.

Speaking on Wednesday night’s Sports Bar, the host said: â€Å“A lot of Liverpool fans phoned me up after the United game, when United went to Barcelona and lost by the same scoreline, and rightly so because it was one-way traffic.

â€Å“But they all told me that when Liverpool go there it would be totally different, but let me tell you, I thought tonight was worse, I think tonight was more embarrassing.

â€Å“Liverpool are a better team than United and Liverpool have got better players than United.

â€Å“On the night I saw two totally different performances. I saw a United performance where they had chances early on, Rashford should have scored and it could have been so different.

â€Å“But you didn’t see that with Liverpool. Mo Salah missed an open goal and James Milner hit one straight down the barrel at Ter Stegen.

â€Å“They were outclassed in every department. I said Barcelona were head and shoulders above Liverpool and tonight they utterly proved it, I thought they were brilliant.”

Liverpool deserve to win the Champions League final after missing out on Premier League title, insists James Milner

James Milner is hoping Liverpool can redeem themselves after missing out on the Premier League and says they deserve to beat Tottenham in the Champions League final.

The Reds ended the season on 97 points – a club record haul – and with just one defeat, yet still didn’t win the Premier League title, as City retained their title by a single point.

However, Liverpool could console themselves if they were to win the Champions League for a sixth time when they face Spurs in Madrid on June 1.

In one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history, Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat La Liga champions Barcelona 4-0, while Lucas Moura scored a sensational hat-trick as Spurs stunned Ajax 3-2.

It will be the first English final since 2008, when Manchester United beat Chelsea and Milner is hopeful Liverpool will end the season with silverware.

“When you think of 30 wins out of 38, at the start of the season you’d like to think that’s good enough,” Milner told Liverpool’s website.

“But obviously that shows how good Man City are as well. It’s disappointing.

“We have to be proud of what we’ve achieved. Unfortunately it’s just short, but obviously what we did earlier in the week [versus Barcelona] gives us a chance to go and redeem ourselves and get a piece of silverware because I think everyone deserves a bit of silverware.”

“I think the team especially, these boys, how they grind out results.

He added: “The fans have been unbelievable all year, they’ve lifted us when we’ve needed them, they’ve stuck with us when it’s been tough in games and like I say, the boys deserve a bit of silverware, but the fans do too.”
