Thierry Henry: Arsenal legend to return to Belgium coaching staff after disastrous spell as Monaco manager

Thierry Henry will reportedly rejoin Belgium’s coaching staff after his disastrous spell as Monaco manager.

Henry, the former Arsenal striker, spent just three months in charge at the Stade Louis II, accepting his first ever head coach job to replace the sacked Leonardo Jardim.

However, he won just four of 20 matches in charge and was dismissed earlier this year, with Jardim returning to the dugout as Henry’s successor.

Before taking the Monaco job, Henry was part of Belgium manager Roberto Martinez’s coaching staff, beginning as second assistant coach before being promoted to assistant when Graeme Jones joined West Brom.

He helped the Red Devils finish third at last summer’s World Cup – their best ever finish – and the Mirror claim Henry will return to their backroom team despite his humiliation at Monaco.

When hired by Monaco, Henry was tasked with guiding the former Ligue 1 champions away from the relegation places after a terrible start to the season.

Jardim was sacked with the club 18th in the table, but Henry’s dreadful run meant he left with them one place lower.

ASM have enjoyed a small upturn in their fortunes since Jardim returned to the dugout, with a series of positive results moving them eight points clear of the drop.

Phil Foden is on the verge of entering a crossroads in his career and could be forced to make a move away from Manchester City, believes former Citizens defender Danny Mills.

The midfielder was handed his first Premier League start for his boyhood club for Wednesday night’s victory over Cardiff.

And the 18-year-old performed well, forcing saves from Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge while also seeing a close range shot hit the post.

Foden’s previous appearances in City colours this season have been good which has seen him score in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Manager Pep Guardiola even claimed Foden can be a club great for the next decade and vowed to give him more minutes next season.

However, Mills believes that if Foden doesn’t make more than ten starts next season, he may have ‘a real decision’ to make regarding his future at the Etihad Stadium.

Mills told talkSPORT 2: “He [Foden] is almost too good to go out on loan, nobody’s going to buy him for what City want for him, ie £40million or £50million because he’s unproven.

“But he’s got untold ability and I think this time next year if he’s only started maybe ten games then he’s going to have a real decision to make because it’s his boyhood club and he’s a fan.

Foden’s first league start also came on the same night where Callum Hudson-Odoi made his first Chelsea start in the Premier League.

Hudson-Odoi also acquitted himself well, providing an assist for the Blues’ first goal scored by Olivier Giroud as they dispatched Brighton 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

It’s been a roller coaster season for Hudson-Odoi, who made his first appearances for England during their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro last month.

And Mills said how Hudson-Odoi, also 18, receiving a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad could be a factor in Foden possibly looking to play elsewhere in the future.

Mills added: “He’s only 18-years-old but he’ll be looking at the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi who also made his first Premier League start last night, but he [Hudson-Odoi] is in the England side.

“And he might go to the mini-tournament [Nations League] in the summer and off the back of that he might go to the Euros.

“Foden’s going to be sat there thinking ‘you know what, I’m as good as that, I’m even better than that, I want a piece of that action’.

“But to get it, he might have to force a move on loan or on a permanent basis but that’s probably another twelve months down the line.”

‘Arsenal won’t miss Aaron Ramsey as much as people think’, says Piers Morgan on talkSPORT

Piers Morgan has hit out at those criticising Arsenal for allowing Aaron Ramsey to join Juventus in a free transfer, insisting the Gunners ‘won’t miss him as much as people think’.

Ramsey will end his 11-year stay with the north London club this summer, having agreed to join the Italian champions when his Arsenal contract expires.

The move has surprised many, especially given his prominent role in Unai Emery̢۪s team, with the club facing criticism for letting another of their top players leave for nothing.

1

Rasmey is off to Italy to join Juventus in the summer

The 28-year-old has made 35 appearances for the Gunners this season, scoring four goals and providing eight assists.

But Morgan says the anti-Arsenal clamour surrounding Ramsey̢۪s exit is ridiculous and insists they will not miss the midfielder next season.

â€Å“Aaron Ramsey reminds me of Olivier Giroud – they’re both very good footballers, but honestly we haven’t missed Giroud at all since he left and I don’t think we’re going to miss Ramsey anything like the way people keep going on about it,” he told Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

â€Å“The truth is, Ramsey for the last few years has been a perfectly good player in the team, but under Emery he hasn’t started that many games.

â€Å“Recently he’s started playing well because he’s got his big deal and good luck to him. He’s been a good servant to the team.

â€Å“But Ramsey has been part of the least successful Arsenal team over a decade-long period that we’ve probably ever had.

â€Å“So let’s get things in perspective.

â€Å“We need world class players to come in. I think we’ve got some in the team.

â€Å“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are beginning to show that they’re pretty formidable as a forward duo, Mesut Ozil is world class when he fancies it but doesn’t fancy it enough, and I think we’re seeing some of the other come through as well.

â€Å“But honestly, does the future of Arsenal depend on Ramsey? I don’t see it.

â€Å“Some Arsenal fans may disagree with me, but I just don’t.”

Morgan and Ramsey have history.

The Good Morning Britain presenter has been a vocal critic of the midfielder̢۪s performances throughout his senior career at the Emirates Stadium, so much so that the Welshman refused to shake Morgan̢۪s hand after a game back in 2015.

And, after Ramsey asked ‘who’s Piers Morgan?’ in an interview, Morgan began referring to the former Cardiff City man as ‘whatshisname’.

Listen back to Piers Morgan on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast IN FULL above!

Speaking with talkSPORT, Piers Morgan explained why he believes Aaron Ramsey should not be missed at Arsenal. First of all, the presenter sees the Welshman as a Giroud-type midfielder, someone who has been decent, but ultimately not good enough for Arsenal.

Virgil van Dijk: Arsene Wenger and Rio Ferdinand critical of Liverpool defender’s ‘criminal’ mistake for Barcelona opener

Rio Ferdinand and Arsene Wenger were both critical of Virgil van Dijk, claiming he could have done more to prevent Barcelona̢۪s opening goal against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Luis Suarez turned in Jordi Alba̢۪s cross in the first half to put the Spanish club 1-0 up in the Champions League semi-final clash at the Nou Camp.

They went on to beat Liverpool 3-0 as Lionel Messi scored twice to put one foot in the final.

Van Dijk̢۪s role in that Suarez̢۪s opener was criticised by both former Arsenal manager Wenger and ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand.

Wenger told beIN Sports: â€Å“It was a half of top-quality.

â€Å“We saw a really high intensity from Liverpool. I feel they are unlucky to be 1-0 down because they are dangerous.

â€Å“Physically they are stronger than Barcelona, especially pace-wise. Barcelona made two or three yellow cards because they could not even run with Liverpool’s players.

â€Å“But when they get into the final third Barca have that quality. One chance, one goal.

â€Å“It is very interesting because Virgil van Dijk (usually) covers, but he should go with Suarez to cover that goal.

Leicester City 0-1 Newcastle United: Rafa Benitez’s side edge closer to Premier League safety after Ayoze Perez strikes

Newcastle United inched closer to safety after a 1-0 win over Leicester City.

Ayoze Perez met Matt Ritchie’s brilliant cross with a subtle header to give the Magpies the lead in the first half.

Miguel Almiron celebrates with goalscorer Ayoze Perez

The striker’s eighth goal of the season earned the Magpies a vital victory and their first victory on the road since December.

It moved Newcastle up to 13th, 10 points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone, having played up to two games more than their rivals with four matches remaining.

Salomon Rondon’s splendid first-half free kick hit the bar for Newcastle and Jamie Vardy missed the Foxes’ best chance when he lifted over late on as the hosts’ four-game winning run ended.

Defeat was also a major dent in the race for seventh and a possible Europa League spot with Watford, Everton and Wolves all ready to take advantage over the weekend.

Jamie Vardy heads Leicester’s bets chance over the bar

4

Jamie Vardy heads Leicester’s bets chance over the bar

The Foxes had started well enough and the teams traded early half chances through Jamaal Lascelles and Jamie Vardy before Leicester took control.

Ben Chilwell and Harvey Barnes were threats but the Magpies almost took the lead out of the blue after 15 minutes.

Wes Morgan fouled Perez and Rondon crashed a brilliant curling free kick against the crossbar from 30 yards.

The Foxes quickly regained their composure and Chilwell forced Martin Dubravka into a low save after 21 minutes.

Perez’s header proved to be enough

4

Perez’s header proved to be enough

Dubravka also gathered Barnes’ sharp effort after the winger’s strong run with Newcastle having to rely on their counter attacking threat.

But the Foxes, who were sloppy at the back, had given some encouragement and the Magpies cashed in to grab the winner after 32 minutes.

It was poor from Leicester but Newcastle were clinical as Matt Ritchie’s wicked cross found Perez who ran off the back of the unsighted Morgan to glance in a terrific near-post header across Kasper Schmeichel.

Miguel Almiron then forced Schmeichel into a low stop as the visitors pushed for a surprise second.

4

Schmeichel stops the striker from getting his second

It had been a textbook counter-attacking away performance from Benitez’s side and they began the second half on the front foot – only for Perez to horribly miscue Rondon’s cross.

Leicester, with just two clean sheets this year, were ragged and Almiron sliced well over just before the hour as the visitors threatened again.

Slowly, though, the Foxes built momentum without finding the killer pass with Vardy well marshalled by the Magpies’ defence.

A fifth straight win would have equalled Leicester’s best run in the top flight since 2017.

But their hopes began to fade and James Maddison curled a free kick over with 15 minutes left.

Time was running out and Schmeichel needed to be alert to save at Perez’s feet after the striker turned Chilwell.

Yet Vardy should have levelled with 10 minutes left when he was slipped in by Youri Tielemans and could only scoop over with Dubravka to beat.

Scott McTominay outperformed Barcelona stars during Manchester United defeat, claims Ally McCoist

Ally McCoist has singled out countryman Scott McTominay for praise following his performance during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Barcelona.

The Red Devils were largely uninspiring and Luke Shaw̢۪s own goal has given them a mountain to climb at the Camp Nou, but McTominay̢۪s display gave some cause for optimism at Old Trafford.

McTominay was a standout performer against Barcelona

1

McTominay was a standout performer against Barcelona

The 22-year-old showed no fear against one of world football̢۪s greatest midfields, regaining possession on numerous occasions with his relentless and energetic determination to press.

In fact, in L’Equipe’s infamously brutal player ratings, the Scotland international was given a ‘7’ – the highest of any player on the pitch.

â€Å“I thought McTominay might’ve been one of the best players on the park last night,” Scotland legend McCoist told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. â€Å“He was top class.”

However, his performance was not matched by those in front of him as United failed to register a single shot on target during the match.

And McCoist doesn̢۪t fancy their chances of progression following the underwhelming result.

â€Å“It wasn’t a brilliant Barcelona,” he added. â€Å“That’s one of the concerning things for United because you could look at it as an opportunity missed.

â€Å“Messi wasn’t at his best, Suarez wasn’t at his best. But they were still comfortable.

â€Å“I fear for United at the Nou Camp, I really do. As brilliant as the result was in Paris, to knock Barcelona out they’re going to need an even better result.
