Manchester United handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the job is Ć¢€˜an unavoidable mistakeĆ¢€™, says Simon Jordan

Manchester United have made Ć¢€˜an unavoidable mistakeĆ¢€™ by appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager, according to Simon Jordan.

The worst-kept secret in football was finally confirmed on Thursday as the Norwegian signed a three-year deal to become full-time bossƂ of the Red Devils.

Ole’s at the wheel – and this time it’s permanent

Ole’s at the wheel – and this time it’s permanent

Old Trafford legend Solskjaer has breathed new life into the United team since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December. He has revived the clubĆ¢€™s top four hopes and also steered them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

His appointment, therefore, is unsurprising and was widely expected.

But Jordan believes the club have made the wrong call by not bringing in a more experienced coach to help United bridge the gap to their top rivals.

The former Crystal Palace owner said: Ć¢€Å“The reason I say itĆ¢€™s an unavoidable mistake is because their performances have justified the appointment, but Manchester United are in a difficult position.

Ć¢€Å“ItĆ¢€™s been six years since they last won the Premier League title and there are three sides who are better than them – Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Ć¢€Å“I think they can bridge the gap player-wise, but hereĆ¢€™s the conundrum Ć¢€“ there are three better managers than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ć¢€Å“Pep Guardiola is clearly the leading light in management right now, Jurgen Klopp isnĆ¢€™t far behind and has won things, and Mauricio Pochettino working the oracle at Spurs.

Ć¢€Å“United are behind them all on the field and theyĆ¢€™re out of the habit of winning the Premier League. ItĆ¢€™s a big thing when you donĆ¢€™t win the league, ask Liverpool fans Ć¢€“ theyĆ¢€™ve forgotten how to win it and theyĆ¢€™re 29 years down the line now.

Guardiola and Klopp are leagues ahead of Solskjaer, believes Simon Jordan

2

Guardiola and Klopp are leagues ahead of Solskjaer, believes Simon Jordan

Ć¢€Å“If Liverpool were to win the Premier League this year and get their act together, you might find they really galvanise themselves and the distance between them and United gets even greater.

Ć¢€Å“While theyĆ¢€™ve made the appointment because the performances have justified it, itĆ¢€™s one thing fixing something thatĆ¢€™s broken but itĆ¢€™s another thing building your own team. The dynamics change.

Ć¢€Å“I might be giving Solskjaer a bit of a disservice, but I think itĆ¢€™s short term thinking and possibly a long-term problem.

Ć¢€Å“Are we really seriously saying Solskjaer is going to out-think Guardiola, out-do Klopp and stand up to Pochettino? I donĆ¢€™t think so.Ć¢€

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 West Ham United: Hammers inflict first defeat at new ground ahead of Champions League semi-final

West Ham United inflicted the first defeat for Tottenham Hotpsur at their new ground with a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

13 years on from being the first side to beat Arsenal at the Emirates, the Hammers struck just past the hour mark to make history through Michail Antonio.

The 29-year-old became the first player to score against Spurs at their new ground but, in truth, he could have had a hat-trick.

Although they were poor in the second half and defensively all over the place, Vincent Janssen had a chance to draw level in stoppage time, but saw his header cleared off the line by Fabian Balbuena.

With a Champions League semi-final against Ajax looming, Maurico Pochettino will be demanding a reaction from his lacklustre Lilywhites side.

Spurs dominated the first half hour, with Heung-min Son denied early on by Lukasz Fabianksi before Lucas Moura drilled an effort from the edge of the area just wide of the far post.

Fabianski was on hand again to deny Christian Eriksen from close range as Spurs continued to probe. But it was goalless at the break, with the hosts still yet to concede a goal at their new stadium.

However, history was made just after the hour mark by Michail Antonio.

The winger scored the first goal against Tottenham at their new stadium to give West Ham the lead in the 67th minute.

Marko Arnautovic lifted the ball in from the right wing, with Antonio finding space before providing the finish from close range.

Antonio had another shot saved by Llrois just moment later and the Hammers were unlucky not to score at least once more as the frailties at the back for Spurs became more and more evident.

Issa Diop ran from his own half to go clean through, but saw his tame effort pawed away by the World Cup winner.

The afternoon could have ended in tears for the visitors, when Janssen met Juan Foyth’s cross with a header. However, Balbuena reacted superbly to clear the effort off the line.

Although his effort in the dying stages was not particularly impressive, the 21-year-old’s performance as a whole was.

When faced with the pace of Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son, Diop coped fantastically well – even managed to deal with the late runs into the box from Dele Alli.

And when Pochettino threw on Fernando Llorente, the youngster was able to deal with the physical threat as Spurs bombarded the box.

After initially struggling in the first half of the season, the former Toulouse captain looks right at home at the heart of the Hammers’ defence.

With the clock ticking and the points slipping away from Spurs, Foyth made a late burst into the West Ham box as he skipped away from several challenges.

Picking his head up, the Argentine whipped in a beautiful cross for the waiting Janssen. Although the Netherlands international has waited so long for a moment like this, he did everything right.

But, as his nickname of ‘The General’ suggests, Balbuena is able to take charge at the back and cleared the ball off the line to deny Spurs and secure a famous win for West Ham.

Maurizio Sarri has been linked with the Juventus job

“I’m not an idiot,” he told talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams.

“I know the rumours and they were there earlier on in the season. The first thing I will say is that Maurizio Sarri is their manager, so from my point of view I should not be saying too much anyway.

“We have a huge game on Monday and the way this club has welcomed me and the opportunity it has given me, and I’ve got two years on my contract, my focus can only be on this game.

“The Chelsea link is an obvious one because of my career there and it might mean we’ve had a pretty good season here and I’m happy with that.

“Monday is huge for this club. It’s huge for me and I want to make sure that any Derby fans that might say ‘what’s Frank thinking?’, I’m absolutely thinking about this game and after the game I will sit with Mel (Morris, Derby owner) and say whatever the result where are we going forward with the club?”

Arsenal fans can’t believe Shkodran Mustafi’s error against Al Nasr – ‘Why is this guy a defender?’

Arsenal’s friendly match against Al-Nasr in Dubai on Tuesday was the perfect opportunity for some of the fringe players to give Unai Emery one or two things to think about ahead of the business end of the season.

However, it looks like defender Shkodran Mustafi has actually done his chances more harm than good during the match.

Mustafi is prone to a defensive error

2

Mustafi is prone to a defensive error

The defender looked a bit foolish when he fell on the floor in the build-up to the middle-eastern side taking a surprise lead.

It was a lovely curling effort by Ronnie Fernandez but Mustafi was sold by a pretty obvious dummy his opponent pulled before unleashing the shot.

This is not the first time Mustafi has made mistakes this season, giving away a silly penalty against Crystal Palace in October – something that angered these Arsenal supporters.

And Arsenal fans appear to have had enough of the Germany international as his error costs his team once again.

Mustafi hasn’t covered himself in glory against Al-Nasr Dubai

Carl Jenkinson levelled the game just before the break before Alexandre Lacazette put Arsenal in front on 51 minutes before Tyreece John-Jules put the result beyond doubt, although a late penalty meant it ended 3-2.

But this is almost insignificant in the eyes of these Gooners, who were so outraged with Mustafi’s performance they’ve taken to Twitter to vent their concerns.

They claim that 26-year-old, who was substituted at half-time for Laurent Koscielny, looked out of his depth against much weaker opposition than Arsenal are used to.

Below you can see some of the best Mustafi tweets from these Arsenal fans.

Manchester City transfer news: Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes will NOT be signing for Pep Guardiola’s men this summer

Manchester City are not interested in signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News claim that club sources have notified them that the 24-year-old is not a transfer target this summer, and thus will not be entering into talks with his representatives.

Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes has scored 31 goals in all competitions so far this season

Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes has scored 31 goals in all competitions so far this season

The Sporting midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the reigning Premier League champions this summer, with Pep Guardiola looking to strengthen his numbers in midfield.

Guardiola is believed to be looking for cover for Fernandinho, while Ilkay Gundogan could also depart in the close season.

City ace Bernardo Silva had even talked Fernandes up in the media recently, labelling him a ‘great player’ and adding: “He has made a fantastic season with many goals, many assists that are not normal for a player of his position.

“He has the spearhead numbers and we will see what happens at the end of the season.

“[He is a] player who can play in other championships.”

City had previously not commented on any links with the midfielder, but the recent revelations appear to have put any speculation regarding a move for Fernandes to bed.

The club have also shelved plans to sign a left-back this summer, despite ongoing concerns about the position owing to Benjamin Mendy’s fitness concerns.

Guardiola had previously said City would be looking to sign a player in that position, but those plans now appear to have changed.
