Tottenham news: Spurs must look to kill off Manchester City in second leg, insists former boss Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp has urged Tottenham to push hard for an away goal in their second leg against Manchester City – rather than sit back and protect their one-goal advantage.

Spurs travel to the Etihad with a slender lead after last night’s 1-0 victory, in which they crucially stopped City from registering an away goal.

It means Spurs can give City a true mountain to climb by scoring at the Etihad, although they may be tempted to protect what they have.

Redknapp, the former Tottenham manager, told talkSPORT: “You look to get a goal. Don’t just sit back and hang on.

“If Tottenham can score then City have an uphill climb, so I make Tottenham slight favourites at the moment, even without Harry Kane.

“They’ll be dangerous on the break knowing that one goal makes it difficult for Man City. They’re in good shape.

“I’d be very happy if I was [Mauricio] Pochettino this morning.

“It’s a great advantage to go there with no away goals against.

“They’ve got a big chance now.”

The victory came at a price as Kane limped off with yet another ankle injury.

The England captain looks likely to miss the second leg after Pochettino suggestion he could be out for the rest of the season.

“It’s a big loss, he’s different class,” Redknapp added.

“So that’s a blow. But they’ll still be strong.”

Aston Villa’s former chairman Randy Lerner will receive £30million after the club won promotion to the Premier League following their win over Derby County at Wembley on Monday.

The payment relates to Lerner’s sale of the club to Chinese billionaire Dr Tony Xia when Villa were relegated in 2016, which included a ‘three-year promotion bonus’.

Xia paid an initial £76.2m for the club and a clause was included stating that Lerner, who took control of Villa in 2006, would be paid an extra £30m, if the club achieved promotion back to the top-flight in the desired time frame.

Lerner will also be given a further £10m if Villa avoid the drop in their first campaign back.

However, that amount, plus the £6m bonus the players will get for winning promotion, is small change for Villa who won the match dubbed ‘the richest in football.’

Deloitte’s Sports Business Group has forecast that promotion to the Premier League is worth £170m over the next three years, and more than £300m over five years if the club is successful against relegation in the first season.

Goals either side of half-time from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn put Villa firmly in control, but Jack Marriott’s strike in the 81st minute, which was deflected by Martyn Waghorn, ensured a nervy finish for Dean Smith’s side who held on for victory.

Barcelona were linked with the forward earlier this week but the Madrid outfit are considering a bid to prise the forward away from London.

Griezmann announced he would be leaving Los Colchoneros at the end of the season and Barcelona were immediately installed as frontrunners for his signature.

However, Paris Saint-Germain have also shown interest in the Frenchman and Atletico deal-makers are looking to get as much money as possible for their talisman.

According to French outlet Le 10 Sport, Arsenal have reportedly had an approach from the LaLiga club over a deal for Lacazette.

While no formal talks have been opened, the Gunners will be wary of their striker becoming unsettled by the interest, especially as both Barcelona and Atletico can guarantee Champions League football next season.

The 27-year-old has become a crucial member of Unai Emery’s squad, notching up 13 goals and eight assists this season to be named the Gunners’ Player of the Year.

However, Atletico have also shown interest in PSG marksman Edinson Cavani, which will come as a relief to Emirates deal-makers.

Last weekend, Lacazette admitted he was ‘flattered’ with the reports linking him to Barcelona.

Zinedine Zidane is plotting the sale of three Real Madrid stars in the summer, reports claim.

Los Blancos are enduring a nightmare season in LaLiga, sitting 13 points behind bitter rivals Barcelona with eight games to play.

If their poor form continues, this season could end up being the worst in the history of the Bernabeu side.

They have lost 15 matches this term – a total they had not reached since the 1993/94 campaign – and four more defeats will equal their worst ever campaign.

As a result of this, Zidane, who returned as manager last month, has been urged to begin preparations for a huge squad overhaul in the summer.

Brazilian defender Eder Militao has already been signed for next season, but a dressing room clear-out is set to begin before the transfer window opens.

And according to the Mail, Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Isco are the first players who could face the axe.

There has been speculation about the future of Bale, with Zidane often favouring Isco over him in the line-up in his first stint in charge.

The Welshman has failed to win over the Los Blancos support in his six-year stint in the Spanish capital, despite playing an instrumental role in four Champions League triumphs and a LaLiga title.

While Isco and Kroos, who are fan favourites among Real fans, will also reportedly be shown the door in the summer.

The problem Zidane has is that those three players are currently on contracts lasting until 2022, and unless they have takers in the summer it will be difficult to ship them out.

Madrid also have ten players out on loan and will have a 35-man squad on their books at the end of the season.

Supporters are just as keen for certain members of the squad to be frozen out, so Zidane must place them in the shop window early if he wants to begin his transfer business this summer.

England led 1-0 in the first-half through Marcus Rashford’s penalty, but a Matthijs de Ligt header took the game to extra-time.

And England were punished for two costly mistakes at the back, from John Stones and Ross Barkley, as Oranje booked their place in the final against Portugal with a 3-1 win.

It was an all too familiar scene for England, as they again fell at the penultimate hurdle and are now set to play a pointless third place play-off in a competition that, as yet, holds little significance to many.

And Allardyce believes Southgate’s focus on playing it out from the back is a huge issue for the current Three Lions team.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Friday, Big Sam insisted there’s always a time and a place where hoofing the ball away is the best policy.

“Playing it out from the back is fine, when you can do it,” the ex-England boss told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“But I think there’s a brainwashing going on in terms of playing out from the back, that it had to be done every single time, and it’s wrong.

“The player then believes he has to do it every single time, and every time that happens it creates more and more risk, so if the opposition are squeezing you you’re bound to be under pressure.

“That’s when you make mistakes, and that’s exactly what we saw last night.

“There were more than two errors in the final third, it could have been three or four goals because of those basic errors made in the final third.

“That cannot be what you continue to tell your players, that you must only play it out from the back all the time.

“There is a time when you must clear your lines, push up the pitch and put pressure on the opposition.”
