Tottenham vs Liverpool: Roberto Firmino passed fit for Champions League final, Jurgen Klopp confirms

Liverpool have been given a huge boost ahead of their Champions League final against Tottenham – with Roberto Firmino returning to fitness.

The Brazilian has missed the last three matches, including the semi-final victory over Barcelona, with a thigh problem.

Firmino has returned to fitness just in time for the Madrid showdown

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed the striker is fit, although he would not go as far as saying he would start.

“Yes, he’s ready. If he will start… if Poch afterwards says his exact line-up then call me and I will tell you our line-up as well,” he said.

“If not, then I thought I’d keep at least a few question marks open.

“He’s fit, he’s trained, he’s here and if nothing happened from the moment he left the plane until now – I didn’t see him since then – he’ll be fine.”

Klopp laughed off his appalling record in finals by rebranding himself a “world record-holder in winning semi-finals” and insisting he is not the problem.

The German has lost the last six showpiece events he has contested since winning the German Cup in 2012.

He has finished a Champions League runner-up twice (with Borussia Dortmund and then Liverpool last season) as well as losing two more German Cups with Dortmund and League Cup and Europa League finals with Liverpool.

It is a stick which Klopp has long been accustomed to being beaten with but ahead of their meeting with Spurs in Madrid, the 51-year-old joked about his record when asked whether he believed in fate or bad luck.

“Do you think I have an unlucky career? All my career was not unlucky,” he said.

“My missus always asks me before the season when is the final game of the season, because we are often in it, so I’m not unlucky.

Klopp is feeling relaxed ahead of his third Champions League final

“Since 2012, apart from 2017, I was every year with my team in a final. We came there sometimes with luck.

“I am the world record-holder in the last seven years in winning semi-finals. But if I were to write a book about it probably no-one would buy it.

“If I were to sit in the room and think it is all about me, I am the reason, if I saw myself as a loser, then we would have a problem but I don’t see myself as this.

“If I were to be the reason for losing six years in a row, then everyone needs to worry.

“But we go in a situation where we learn – not from last season’s final as there were three strange goals – a lot from our time together.

“We want to win with all we have and with things that happened in the past I can take confidence from.”

Manchester United vs Manchester City: Pep Guardiola says playing at Old Trafford is ‘not scary’ ahead of crunch Premier League clash

Pep Guardiola believes playing Manchester United at Old Trafford is no longer scary for Manchester City.

City struggled for results at the home of their local rivals before Sheikh Mansour’s takeover, failing to win there between 1974 and 2008.

Guardiola has won both his matches at Old Trafford as Manchester City boss, both 2-1 victories

That has changed in recent times and City – who head across town for a crucial derby on Wednesday – have lost just once there in their last seven Premier League visits.

Guardiola said: “I don’t make theories about what happened in the past or for what is going to happen in the future. Every game is completely different from the previous one.

“The most important reason why is maybe the fact this club, in the last decade, grew a lot and that is why it is not scary to go there when before it was more difficult.

“The players Manchester City have had in the last 10 seasons have made this game a little bit more equal when before the gap was bigger. Maybe that is the reason but honestly I don’t know.”

This week’s encounter could have huge implications in the title race.

Victory for City would take them back to the top of the table having played the same number of games as title rivals Liverpool. With three matches to go, they would then be clear favourites for the crown.

There is plenty at stake for United as well, however. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need points in their battle for a top-four place and they also need to restore pride after their 4-0 humbling at Everton on Sunday.

United will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Everton

3

United will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Everton

Form is certainly on City’s side, with United having lost six of their last eight in all competitions, but Guardiola says that counts for little.

He said: “(There are) four games left so we have to win all four games to retain the title.

“It is not an easy place to go but at the same time, it is a nice place to go. We know exactly what we have to do. They fight to finish in the top four and fight for the title. We are going to go there to play a good game.

“I expect the best United. They are bright. Football players, they have pride and try to do their best and tomorrow that is going to happen.

Guardiola believes United will be at their best on Wednesday night

3

Guardiola believes United will be at their best on Wednesday night

“We will prepare for the game as always, what they do with their strong points and weak points and try to win the game.”

City will be without playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who faces a spell out after suffering a hamstring injury against Tottenham at the weekend.

Guardiola hopes the Belgian could return before the end of the season.

He said: “It is a muscular problem and we will see in the next days but tomorrow is not available.”

Guardiola, speaking at a press conference, dismissed suggestions £60million record signing Riyad Mahrez could leave the club after a frustrating season.

He said: “Riyad Mahrez will be with us for the next season here, and the next one, and the next one.

“We are delighted with his behaviour and the way he plays. Riyad is not going to move. He is happy, we are happy.”

Manchester City have a 100% record at Old Trafford under Pep Guardiola. But Guardiola insisted that United's abysmal performance against Everton would not help City's cause, and he expects the "best Manchester United" in tomorrow's crunch tie. "I saw the game, I imagine what will happen against us. The game against Everton is over.

Mauricio Pochettino lauds Tottenham’s ‘amazing’ new stadium and says players have ‘something wrong in their heads’ if not motivated to play there

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham’s players are sure to be inspired by the atmosphere inside their new stadium, having finally played their first match at the stunning ground.

Spurs returned home after a six-month delay to open the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening, with Crystal Palace the first visitors – and losers – at the £1billion structure.

After an opening ceremony that involved choirs, tenors and fireworks the game itself took a while to spark into life – Heung-min Son writing his name in the history books with the first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Christian Eriksen wrapped up a 2-0 win.

While securing victory on their big night was important, the three points also sees Tottenham move into third having picked up their first Premier League win since February 10.

Where other clubs have struggled to adjust to new homes in the past, Pochettino believes his side will not suffer the same fate as they battle for a top-four finish.

The Argentine is so sure his players will be motivated by the atmosphere in the new stadium, he suggests those NOT inspired must have ‘something wrong with their heads’.

“I feel so proud,” he said.

“I am so happy and it is difficult to describe, the emotions and it was very emotional before the start of the game. It was very emotional, all the build-up of the game.

“For sure for the opponent it is going to be difficult. If like me I am the manager of Tottenham or I am playing for Tottenham, you adapt so quickly in this atmosphere and I think it was amazing.

“It is impossible not to be affected by your fans, the energy and emotion to be there and run, shoot, save and tackle.

“If you are not motivated to play in this type of atmosphere something wrong happened in your head. For sure it is going to be tough for the opponent.

“That is our second day at the stadium for us and the players but it starts to feel like home, it is going to be such an important place for the future and of course I think we were right to move here.

“With all the risk, of course, but I think in football if you want to achieve important things you need to be brave and we were brave moving and starting to play this season.”

Roy Hodgson’s side left north London with nothing to show for their battling performance, though they will forever go down in history as the first team to have played at the stadium.

“It is outstanding,” Hodgson admitted of the ground.

“I can understand why there has been so much hype around it – they must be extremely proud to have created a stadium like this for their team to perform in.”

Tottenham vs Liverpool: talkSPORT writers predict who will win Champions League final

Tottenham vs Liverpool: talkSPORT writers predict who will win Champions League final

Tottenham and Liverpool will battle it out for domestic football’s most coveted prize when they meet in the Champions League final on Saturday.

After the two clubs staged dramatic semi-final comebacks to get to Madrid, both will feel like their name is on the trophy.

The Wanda Metropolitano will host the Champions League final on Saturday

GETTY

4

The Wanda Metropolitano will host the Champions League final on Saturday

But there can only be one winner – and here at talkSPORT.com, we’ve tried to predict who that might be.

Liverpool did the double over Tottenham earlier this season and finished 26 points above them in the league.

Overall, the Reds have dominated their recent history with Spurs, losing just one of their last 14 meetings.

You’d back Jurgen Klopp’s men on paper, but as we all know, Champions League finals aren’t played on paper.

Here’s how our writers expect the game to go…

Sean O’Brien – Tottenham

Logic says Liverpool, but where has logic been throughout this remarkable Champions League campaign?

Tottenham, in my opinion, are far more adaptable to a cagey European final, whereas Liverpool will play their heavy-metal football regardless of the occasion – often to their detriment.

The Reds would’ve been hoping for Ajax. Spurs know too much about them. I expect Pochettino to outsmart Klopp.

Tottenham pulled off a miraculous second-half comeback against Ajax in their semi-final

Tottenham pulled off a miraculous second-half comeback against Ajax in their semi-final

Joe Moore – Liverpool

We all know league form don’t mean squat in a cup final, but surely there is only one outcome here.

This is Spurs’ first ever European Cup final, while these Reds players have been there before and will be fired up from the INJUSTICE last year against Real Madrid.

Plus, they’ll be desperate to end the season with a trophy after missing out on the Premier League title – again! Six-time European champions, anyone? COME ON YOU REDS!

Joe Coleman – Tottenham

The arrogance emanating from some of Liverpool’s players before this final is quite staggering; with James Milner the latest player to suggest the Reds ‘deserve’ to win the trophy.

On paper, Jurgen Klopp’s side is stronger – especially if Harry Kane is not at 100% against the powerhouse that is Virgil van Dijk.

But Mauricio Pochettino is doing his utmost to remove the tag of ‘bottlers’ from this Spurs team and their performances show that. Expect to see the north Londoners come out all guns blazing.

Liverpool could end up trophyless despite performing at an incredible level all season

Getty

4

Liverpool could end up trophyless despite performing at an incredible level all season

Jackson Cole – Liverpool

Both Tottenham and Liverpool have done brilliantly to make it to Madrid especially during the semi-finals when it looked very unlikely either of them would make it through after their respective first legs.

But I think this is Liverpool’s time as their success this season has had more substance to it. They haven’t won anything in the 2018/19 campaign so far but they’ve played like champions, whereas Tottenham’s path to the final has essentially been done on adrenaline – similar to the situation Liverpool were in 12 months ago when they made the final in Kiev.

Liverpool have more depth to their team too which could be decisive in such a tight game at the end of a very long season. A Liverpool win would finally show Spurs owner Daniel Levy what can happen if you’re willing to ‘be brave’ in the transfer market, as Mauricio Pochettino subtly put it a year ago.

Who will claim the coveted prize?

GETTY

4

Who will claim the coveted prize?

Josh Fordham – Tottenham

Things just seem to be going Spurs’ way in the Champions League this season.

It will be a close game but I can see Pochettino’s side edging it in extra time.

Oliver Dawnay – Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds will be desperate for some silverware following the superb season they have had and I believe they have too much quality for Spurs all over the pitch.

Daniel Sandford – Liverpool

Liverpool will be desperate to win after their Premier League disappointment. They boast a better attack and Kane’s lack of fitness could prove a huge blow to Spurs.
