Everton manager Marco Silva frustrated at lack of credit given to his side for Manchester United thrashing

Marco Silva hinted he was disappointed at the lack of credit Everton received after last weekend’s remarkable 4-0 rout of Manchester United.

The Toffees followed up wins over Chelsea and Arsenal in recent weeks by dismantling United at Goodison Park, but much of the fallout centred on the shortcomings of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Silva was typically phlegmatic when asked whether he felt Everton’s achievement had been glossed over but said: “It is up to you [the media] to give the right credit and to look for both teams, not just for one.

“But I cannot change anything, it’s not my job.

“What I can tell you and it is easy for me to understand is when we didn’t achieve the good results, it’s because it’s our fault. Maybe when we achieve good results it’s because it’s the fault of the others.

“You analyse the game, I do my job and analyse the game with my players. When things are going wrong I’m the first one to take responsibility and when we achieve good results it’s up to us to analyse the game.

“I don’t know if [the win over United] was the best [performance of the season] or not, it was one of the best.

“We did really well, we performed well, we were clinical and assertive in the last third and in important moments of the match.”

Richarlison started the rout last Sunday with a magnificent acrobatic overhead kick but was later withdrawn, clutching his left side as he went off minutes after half-time.

Silva revealed the Brazil forward is a ‘major doubt’ to face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon while Theo Walcott, the Brazilian striker’s replacement against United and who completed the scoring, is struggling with sickness.

However, Lucas Digne, another on the scoresheet last weekend, has recovered from a knock he suffered which forced his late withdrawal while Yerry Mina has resumed full training.

The arrest relates to an incident at Oakwell, home of Barnsley, on Saturday 13 April.

On Saturday the League One side hosted Fleetwood Town, winning 4-2 to move back into the promotion places.

Barnsley subsequently revealed they had lodged a complaint to the EFL and FA following a tunnel incident.

â€Å“Barnsley Football Club can confirm that it has lodged a formal complaint to both the English Football League and the Football Association,” said a club statement. â€Å“This is following an alleged incident at the conclusion of the match on Saturday 13th April, between Joey Barton and Daniel Stendel.

â€Å“The club is also currently working with the police and assisting with all enquiries regarding the incident. No further comment will be issued whilst police investigations are ongoing.”

Police said enquires are ongoing, but had earlier appealed for witnesses for an incident they believed occurred in the tunnel at around 5pm.

“Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have caught the incident on camera or who may have any mobile phone footage immediately before or after the incident occurred,” a police statement said.

Celtic news: Lisbon Lion Stevie Chalmers dies aged 83, the club confirm

Stevie Chalmers, one of Celtic’s Lisbon Lions, has died at the age of 83, the club have announced.

Chalmers etched his name into Celtic folklore when he scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 win against Inter in the 1967 European Cup final at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon.

A statement from his family, issued via the club, read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stevie Chalmers, our loving father and devoted husband to Sadie. The Celtic legend was surrounded by family when he sadly passed away early this morning [Monday, 29 April).

Chalmers’ death comes a week after Billy McNeill, captain of the Lisbon Lions, also died.

The statement added: “In recent times Stevie endured the toughest of battles, but just as he approached every game in a green and white jersey, he tackled his long-term illness with much bravery and dignity.

“Stevie, first and foremost, was a family man to his loving wife Sadie; their children, Stephen, Carol, Paul, Ann, Martin, Clare, grandchildren, great grandchildren and wider family members.

“He felt honoured and privileged to have played alongside the Lisbon Lions, and this camaraderie and friendship carried on long after their playing days as the team became lifelong friends.

“Celtic was an integral part of Stevie’s life and he devoted much of his career to the famous Glasgow club. He was adored by Celtic supporters in Scotland and around the world, especially for his passion, loyalty and integrity.”

Chalmers scored 231 goals in 406 Celtic games between 1959 and 1971, with only Henrik Larsson (242), Bobby Lennox (277) and Jimmy McGrory (468) having scored more.

However, the goal in 1967 with just five minutes of the final remaining, ensured Celtic became the first British club to life the European Cup.

He very nearly didn’t make it as a professional, though, as he was struck by tuberculosis meningitis at the age of 20. He spent six months in hospital, but made a full recovery.

Chalmers left Celtic in 1971 and had spells at Morton and Partick Thistle before retiring in 1975.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “This is such terrible news, and on behalf of the club, I would first of all like to pass on my condolences to Stevie’s wife, Sadie, their children, Stephen, Carol, Paul, Ann, Martin, Clare, and their grandchildren.

“Stevie was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this desperately sad time.

“This is a particularly devastating time for the Celtic family, with the passing of Stevie Chalmers coming so soon after his friend and former team-mate, Billy McNeill. My condolences also go to the Lisbon Lions, already mourning the loss of their captain, and now grieving the death of another one of their own.”

Manchester United have failed to progress since I was manager, David Moyes tells talkSPORT

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has told talkSPORT the club have not progressed since he left and MUST start backing their managers again.

Moyes’ short reign has gone down in English football folklore, as the Scot – handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson as his successor – lasted just nine months in charge at Old Trafford.

Moyes was sacked before finishing his first season as United boss

Moyes was sacked before finishing his first season as United boss

United have had three permanent managers in the four seasons since his departure, and yet fans are yet to see a dramatic upturn in their fortunes.

Yes, they have won trophies, lifting the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal and sealing a League Cup and Europa League double under Jose Mourinho.

But their standing in the Premier League has barely moved since Moyes̢۪ exit. They may have finished runners-up last season, but this term has shown just how far behind top rivals Manchester City and Liverpool they are.

Manchester United - no progress?

Man United under Moyes:

Premier League finish: 7th, 64 points

Champions League progress: Quarter-finals

Major honours won: 0

Man United this season:

Premier League position: 6th, 65 points

Champions League progress: Quarter-finals

Major honours won: 0

United have also spent well over £500million since Moyes left, and yet the former boss says the club still have the same problems he faced when he was in the dugout.

Speaking on Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Moyes said: â€Å“I feel that since I took over to where they are just now, I don’t think there’s an awful lot of difference.

â€Å“When I took over it was needing a change and needing a turnaround of players, and that was all going to take time.

Moyes believes Man United have not improved since he left the club

3

Moyes believes Man United have not improved since he left the club

â€Å“I feel like in the four years or so since I was managing there, it’s probably not moved on much more.

â€Å“It’s quite similar, they’re still saying there needs to be changes and has to be things done.

â€Å“That time since I felt hasn’t been used awfully well.”

Moyes also urged United to back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and bring back their old transfer philosophy of signing the next generation of star players.

United̢۪s recent managerial history as a huge departure from the norm, following Sir Alex̢۪s trophy-laden 27 year reign at Old Trafford.

After struggling for regular success since the legendary manager’s retirement, Moyes believes the club simply have to stick by their current boss.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United have lost seven of their last nine games

3

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United have lost seven of their last nine games

The Scot is also concerned the club has lost its way in the transfer market and has been too focused on bringing ready-made superstars to Old Trafford.

â€Å“Manchester United stood for so many good things for me,” Moyes added.

â€Å“They supported their manager in difficult times, they made sure they got the best young players, they didn’t follow the trends of lots of bother clubs.

â€Å“For me, those things have been broken a little bit.

â€Å“They always bought young up-and-coming players, there was a different philosophy in the types of players they brought in.

â€Å“But now they’ve had to follow the others because they need that instant success.

â€Å“They need to give ole time and an opportunity to give it around, but it will be difficult.

â€Å“Bringing on all your young players in great, that’s what we really want to do, but it’s not necessarily going to get you results and winning leagues right away.”

Manchester United transfer news: Sergio Ramos ‘could leave’ Real Madrid amid Red Devils interest as club ‘re-open talks with Antoine Griezmann’

Sergio Ramos could leave Real Madrid this summer with Manchester United reportedly keen on a deal as they also eye Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.

The 33-year-old is believed to have fallen out with Bernabeu chief Florentino Perez following the club’s shock Champions League exit to Ajax in March.

Manchester United are in the market for a commanding central defender after conceding 54 league goals this season – the most of any top six side in England.

The Red Devils have been linked with Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marca claim they have enquired about the availability of Ramos.

The Real Madrid captain missed the last seven games of the season with a calf injury, but is set to return for Spain’s two Euro 2020 qualifiers next month.

United, who finished the 2018/19 Premier League season in sixth and 32 points off champions Manchester City, are looking to rebuild their squad under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And they are also reportedly moving back in for Griezmann.

Manchester United’s previous interest in Antoine Griezmann has been no secret

The Atletico Madrid wantaway declared his intention to leave the club last week and it was assumed his destination would be Barcelona.

It’s been long-rumoured that Griezmann would join up with Lionel Messi and co at Camp Nou, however this has now hit a snag.

Reports suggest that several members of the Barca hierarchy are unconvinced whether the benefits of a potential ‘£100m+’ signing justify such a huge outlay.

As a result, it is now being claimed by the Independent that Man United have re-established contact and a deal is possible.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has been at Atletico for five years, scoring 133 goals in 257 games (as well as picking up 50 assists along the way).

With his national team, Griezmann has 28 goals in 69 caps and was part of the team that won the World Cup last summer.

Mauricio Pochettino unable to give assurances on Tottenham future – ‘Things can turn so quickly’

Mauricio Pochettino admits he is unable to provide assurances he will still be Tottenham boss next season.

The Argentine had been linked with the positions at Manchester United and Real Madrid, but the clubs have appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Zinedine Zidane respectively, meaning interest in Pochettino has ended.

Pochettino is a firm favourite among the Spurs faithful

Pochettino knows things change in football far too quickly to take anything for granted.

Asked whether he could say he would definitely be at Spurs next season, he replied: “But again it’s the same question as two months ago, three months ago.

“Why has it changed? It does not depend only on me, it’s about Daniel (Levy). Of course I know he is happy with me and that is what he is telling me.

“But I understand Tottenham is bigger than one person. Tottenham is bigger than one player, Tottenham is bigger than everything.

“Always, you need to feel my position here is I need to fight every day to keep my position. That doesn’t mean I am not comfortable.

“Always I tell Jesus (Perez, assistant manager), we need to think that maybe tomorrow if we don’t care about our position maybe we can go away quick. Football changes the same very quickly.

“It’s difficult to say I am now happy and sure I will be here next season. If I said that and something wrong happened and I’m not here then you say, ‘Oh Pochettino said he will be here and now he’s not here’.

“I don’t say because maybe the rumour can be true or Daniel can say ‘it’s enough, I need another manager’.

Pochettino admits Levy could decide Spurs need a new manager next season

“In my mind, always I am living today can be the last day, tomorrow can be the last day. That is my philosophy.

“Look at what happened at Real Madrid. Zidane said, ‘I go’, then two managers and not even the end of the season and he’s back. Who believed that?

“That is why in football, you must respect football because everything that today is white, tomorrow is black and then white again. I try to live with this respect and knowing things can turn so quickly.”

Pochettino says football can change very quickly

Pochettino is plotting to become the first team to win at Anfield in the Premier League this season as they bid to revive their season.

Spurs travel to Liverpool to play their first game for 22 days aiming to stop a rot that saw them take just one point from their four matches before their hiatus.

That saw them not only slip out of the title race, which the Reds are currently leading, but also put their top-four spot under serious jeopardy as themselves, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are separated by just four points.

They could not be handed a tougher task on their resumption, which came due to the FA Cup quarter-finals and the international break, as Jurgen Klopp’s side have dropped just four points in front of their own fans this season in draws with Manchester City and Leicester.

Spurs were beaten by Liverpool when they faced the Reds at Wembley in September

4

Spurs were beaten by Liverpool when they faced the Reds at Wembley in September

Spurs have not won there in the league in 11 years, although they did take a point in a dramatic draw last season.

“The motivation is to change our dynamic of the results, we need to start to feel again the victory,” Pochettino said.

“It is a challenge to go there. They are unbeaten in Premier League at Anfield, it is going to be a massive challenge.

“We respect them, they are doing good job, very good team, it will be tough.

“Last season, the game was very tough, (our) performance was good, and it was a good point, to start to build in our mind the determination to go there and be competitive and win the game.

“But of course it is going to be difficult.”
