Who is Rhian Brewster? 10 things you didn’t know about Liverpool wonderkid set to make debut against Barcelona tonight

Liverpool fans have had to wait a long time to see their next big hope for the future earn his senior debut but it looks like the wait is finally over.

Rhian Brewster is in line to feature in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final second leg match against Barcelona at Anfield tonight.

The Reds have a mountain to climb after losing the first leg 3-0 at the Camp Nou and also have key players Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino unavailable through injury.

However, that’s given the likes of Brewster an opportunity to impress and who knows, make himself a Kop hero.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said on the possibility of the striker playing: “He’s ready. There is a big chance. It’s nearly sure. It’s guaranteed.

But just who is Rhian Brewster? Below you can see 10 facts you may not know about the 19-year-old.

1) He’s a World Cup winner

Ok, it’s the Under-17 World Cup but still very impressive all the same.

Brewster was part of the England team that won the tournament in India where they beat Spain 5-2 in the final. Brewster scored in the game.

2) He was the top scorer at the Under-17 World Cup in 2017

Brewster won the Golden Boot and Bronze Ball at the tournament with a haul of eight goals.

It’s made all the more amazing when you remember he had only scored one goal after the group stages!

But back-to-back hat-tricks against the USA and Brazil in the knockout stages catapulted Brewster up the goalscoring charts before adding another in the final.

3) He used to play for Chelsea

Another potentially great player Chelsea have let slip away, Brewster was on the Blues’ books from aged seven but chose Liverpool’s academy as a 15-year-old in 2015.

He’s been at Liverpool since and signed a professional contract with the club in June 2018 despite carrying a big ankle injury.

4) He didn’t own a suit when he received his first Liverpool call-up

Largely due to an injury crisis in the first team, Brewster was named in the squad for Liverpool’s Premier League match at home to Crystal Palace in April 2017 which is incidentally the last time the Reds lost a league match at Anfield.

He didn’t play but Klopp recalled the time he told Brewster he was in the squad: “He [Brewster] told me after I said to him that he was in the squad, ‘I have a washbag but I don’t have a suit’. No problem!”

5) He was allegedly the victim of racial abuse during a Liverpool youth match

He’s still a young footballer but Brewster has had to overcome adversity in his career.

The striker claims he was racially abused by Leonid Mironov during Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League match against Spartak Moscow in December 2017.

Brewster claims Mironov called him a ‘n*****’ but the case was thrown out by UEFA due to insufficient evidence.

6) He’s rated by Steven Gerrard

If you’re well thought of by one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players then you’re doing something right.

When he was in charge of the Reds’ Under-18 side, Steven Gerrard spoke highly of Brewster, saying: â€Ĺ“We all know he has got the talent and the ability.

“If Rhian wants to go far and stay at the top, if he can put in that work rate and relentless running, that’s how he’s going to get the better of most defenders.”

7) Jurgen Klopp loves him too

But it’s even better when the man who is in charge of selecting the Liverpool first team rates you.

Klopp has promised Brewster ‘will play 100%’ next season when the youngster is at full fitness following a long-term ankle injury.

And in the build-up to his potential bow when Liverpool face Barca, Klopp said: “He’s ready. There is a big chance. It’s nearly sure. It’s guaranteed.

“Rhian has been in just outstanding shape for the last three or four weeks.”

8) He almost signed for Borussia Monchengladbach

Before he signed for Liverpool, it’s understood Brewster was considering following in the likes of Jadon Sancho’s footsteps and try his hand in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Monchengladbach were rumoured to be very keen on Brewster so much so that Liverpool even cancelled a pre-season friendly they were due to play against the German side that summer as the Premier League club felt Brewster was being tapped up.

9) He’s still eligible to play for Turkey, Cyprus or Barbados

Brewster has represented England at youth level but his international career is up for grabs.

His mother is a Turkish Cypriot making him eligible for Turkey or Cyprus and his father is from Barbados.

However, it’s likely his future lies with the Three Lions.

10) He’s got a bromance with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain!

Team-mates shape footballers and there aren’t many better to have around you than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The charismatic Oxlade-Chamberlain has taken Brewster under his wing as the youngster finds his feet on Merseyside and as you can see from the video below they’re great friends!
