Liverpool transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt no longer a summer target for Reds as Barcelona lead the race

Liverpool have opted against pursuing a move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, according to reports.

De Ligt is one of Europe’s most coveted players, having starred for the Dutch giants in their run to the Champions League semi-final.

Barcelona have been long time admirers of the £60m-rated defender, and appeared to be in a straight tussle for the 19-year-old with Jurgen Klopp’s men.

However, the Mail claim the Reds, like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, have ended their interest in De Ligt.

While City and PSG cited costs as their reason for retracting their interest in the Ajax man, Liverpool have reportedly decided to prioritise their transfer business elsewhere.

They will turn their focus towards a new forward who can play across the front three, as well as finding cover at left-back and in goal – should Simon Mignolet move on.

Barcelona have already signed De Ligt’s team-mate, Frenkie De Jong, with reports in Spain suggesting the LaLiga leaders will return for a second swoop.

Ajax have already made moves to replace De Ligt with Lisandro Martinez, who is close to joining from Defensa y Justicia in Argentina for £5.8million.

The 21-year-old defender, who can play on the left or in the centre, arrived in Amsterdam for his medical on Monday morning ahead of putting pen-to-paper on a four-year deal.

Tottenham vs Liverpool: Reds fanatic Simon Wilson buys £40 car to travel to Champions League final after refusing to pay extortionate flight price

A Liverpool fan has bought a £40 car to travel to the Champions League final because he refused to splash out on extortionate flights to Madrid.

The Reds go head-to-head with Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday in the first all-English final in the competition since 2008.

Simon Wilson has embarked on a mammoth journey from Liverpool to Madrid… in a £40 car

Thousands of Liverpool fans have descended on the capital of Spain, and YouTube sensation, Simon Wilson, will be among that crowd.

Wilson is best known for sneaking into high-profile events including Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor boxing match, as well as the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.

And his latest challenge has seen him combine his two passions – Liverpool FC and vlogging – as he races to Madrid.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Simon said: “I’ll be uploading a couple of videos, but the reason I’m doing this is not just for YouTube.

“I was lucky enough to get a ticket in the ballet through my season ticket, but because the ballot wasn’t announced until recently I didn’t want to book transport.

Wilson’s brother, Ben, bought the Skoda Favorit GLXI on Facebook

Wilson’s brother, Ben, bought the Skoda Favorit GLXI on Facebook

“When I looked online, the transport was so expensive it was ridiculous, the flights were around £800.”

Simon wasn’t going to let the opportunity of potentially seeing his childhood team win a major trophy pass him by though, so sounded out his brother in a bid to sort an alternative method of transport.

He said: “I rang up my brother, Ben, and asked him how much was the cheapest car we could get.”

A short while later and Ben had managed to find a Skoda Favorit GLXI for sale on Facebook for just £40.

He explained: “When he told me I was like ‘just buy it now, we will worry about it afterwards’.”

YouTube sensation Wilson has been spotted by other drivers on the way

Simon and Ben would later find out this particular vehicle is one of only six still licensed to drive in the UK.

With transport sorted, Simon also decided to extend an invitation to one of his subscribers, who is a Tottenham supporter, with a seat spare in his car.

The trio started their mammoth journey to Madrid outside Anfield on Wednesday, travelling down the motorway to get to the ferry port in Dover.

It proved to be a frustrating start though, as despite the Sat Nav saying the journey would take five hours, due to heavy traffic and the car being slow, it took over six – meaning Simon, Ben and the subscriber missed their ferry to Calais.

Luckily, they were able to hop on the next ferry a short time later to continue their journey through France.

The latest update on Simon’s channel sees the guys stopping off for some kip in a side road in Bordeaux – around six hours away from Madrid.

The end is in sight for the lads, but whether the banged up car can last the last stretch remains to be seen.

You can watch Simon’s journey to Madrid on his YouTube channel here .

Manchester City ‘make formal offer’ for Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri after identifying midfielder as potential Fernandinho replacement

Manchester City have made a ‘formal offer’ to sign Atletico Madrid star Rodri, according to reports.

Rodri, who has shone in his debut season at Atletico, has a £61.2million release clause and could follow Antoine Griezmann out of the door after the Frenchman announced he would be leaving the club this summer.

Rodri is reportedly wanted by Pep Guardiola

With Diego Godin and Juanfran set to leave, too, Atletico boss Diego Simeone will be reluctant to lose Rodri.

But Spanish outlet AS say the 22-year-old is ‘very near’ to agreeing a deal to move to the Etihad Stadium and is attracted by the prospect of playing under Pep Guardiola.

Rodri, a defensive midfielder, has been compared to Barcelona ace Sergio Busquets.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo hinted the club would not block a potential exit for Rodri if the right offer was made and the player wanted to leave.

He said: “Today, Rodrigo is an Atletico player. But if tomorrow he has an offer and wants to go…”

Guardiola has played John Stones, Fabian Delph and Ilkay Gundogan in a holding midfield role when Fernandinho has been crocked this season.

It is understood that the City boss wants a natural defensive midfielder to compete with the Brazilian next term.

Eden Hazard future: Zinedine Zidane targeting West Ham ace Felipe Anderson as alternative to signing Blues forward

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is targeting Felipe Anderson as an alternative signing to Eden Hazard, reports claim.

The Frenchman, who was reappointed as Los Blancos chief earlier this month, has been promised a massive overhaul of his current crop of players and has already signed Porto defender Eder Militao.

Anderson is now a target for Real Madrid

Anderson is now a target for Real Madrid

However, according to Sky Sports, Zidane is now drawing his attention away from Hazard and is now targeting Hammers winger Anderson.

Hazard has always idolised Zidane and always dreamt of a move to Los Blancos – but Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban is appearing to be a major stumbling block in the move.

Chelsea are seemingly unwilling to part ways with their talisman as they cannot replace him and therefore may keep hold of their talisman for another season before his contract runs out.

Hazard, who has scored 13 goals and added 11 assists in 29 league matches this season, has so far refused to sign a new deal with the west London club.

And the Blues’ refusal to sell their prize asset has prompted Zidane to instead target Anderson.

The Brazilian is enjoying a good debut season for the Hammers, scoring eight goals in 31 matches.

However, he recently said he wanted to emulate the success of Paolo Di Canio and stay in east London  for the foreseeable future.

He said: â€Å“I just want to do my best for the club, win as many titles as possible. I am happy here, I am not looking for something else.”
