Tottenham legend Graham Roberts believes the club’s ‘name is written’ on the Champions League trophy this season.
The UEFA Cup winner has branded manager Mauricio Pochettino ‘a genius’ and is confident Spurs will beat Liverpool in Madrid on June 1.
The Premier League clubs both beat overwhelming odds to book their final places, in two of the most dramatic semi-final clashes in European history.
But Spurs’ stunning away goals victory over Ajax capped a remarkable journey, which has seen them battle back from the brink of elimination on more than one occasion.
Pochettino’s men almost didn’t qualify from their group, but have now seen off Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax en route to their first ever Champions League final.
And the Spurs hero believes the north London club are destined to lift the trophy this season, as he told talkSPORT ahead of their remarkable second-leg against Manchester City last month.
SPURS' CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MIRACLE
“I told you last time, everybody wrote us off after three games but then we beat PSV and Inter Milan and went to Barcelona and outplayed them,” Roberts told Jim White on Thursday.
“Everybody was writing us off, saying we’re lucky to get through, then we play Borussia Dortmund, top of the league in Germany, and we gave them a thrashing 4-0.
“Then we get drawn against Man City and people said we’re out now, we’ve got no chance, and we done them over two legs.
“And now we’ve done Ajax.
“I said from the day we beat Dortmund that we’ll win this cup.
“It’s going to be a great final between two English teams and you have to go there and play, but these players want to win this trophy for this manager, the supporters and the club.
“Our name is written on it.”
Roberts admitted Wednesday’s ‘special’ win over Ajax may just rival lifting the UEFA Cup in a Spurs shirt back in the 80s.
The White Hart Lane great hailed the team’s performance but reserved special praise for Pochettino.
He said the against-all-odds victory is the latest proof of the Argentine’s footballing genius, and believes he could become one of the club’s all-time greatest managers.
“Winning the UEFA Cup will always be the greatest night of my life, but last night was just special, it was very, very special,” he added.
“Luca Moura will go down in history. Three goals in 35 minutes, that takes some doing, especially in a Champions League semi-final away from home.
“And Pochettino, the man is a genius.
“I’ve met him many, many times and he loves Tottenham Hotspur, he’s very passionate and it all came out last night. I’ve got so much joy for him.
“We’ve had so many problems this year; we didn’t go back into the stadium until late, he never bought a player but he believed in this team, and we’ve had over 50 injuries to 28 different players, so what he’s had to go through is just amazing.
“I’ve got nothing but admiration for him and he’ll become one of the best managers Tottenham have ever had, I’m sure.”
