Premier League Best Goals 2019: talkSPORT writers pick their favourite strike from the season

The end of the Premier League season has allowed fans to reflect on what was another enthralling campaign.

Drama until the final day, the best title race in history and a genuinely superb standard of football made it one of the best seasons in English top-flight history.

But perhaps what was so unique about this season was the quality and consistency of goals throughout the league.

Like a heavyweight with a power punch, teams had the ability to pull something special out of the bag at seemingly any moment to transform games at the drop of the hat.

For instance, Liverpool were outplayed by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge until Daniel Sturridge found the top corner from 30 yards.

And who could forget Andros Townsend’s scorching volley which flew past Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson at an obscene rate of knots?

While the Crystal Palace forward may have won the official title for best goal, here at talkSPORT.com our team of writers wanted to have their say on their best goals of the season.

Scroll down to see who came out on top.

I know Kompany’s goal was more important, but Townsend’s was better. The Goal of the Season doesn’t have to be a title-defining moment; it should stand on its own as the most mesmerising.

Besides, it was a pretty significant strike in the context of Palace’s season and if Liverpool won the league, they would’ve owed a small debt to Townsend.

Damian Mannion (Deputy Editor)

I’ve watched Andros Townsend’s goal a number of times – it was sweetly struck – but I’ve watched Heung-Min Son’s against Chelsea even more.

He whizzed past Jorginho like he wasn’t there, made David Luiz look bang average and then slotted it past the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.

What a way to score your 50th goal for the club and bring an abrupt end to your rival’s unbeaten streak.

Joe Moore (Digital News Editor)

Daniel Sturridge’s strike against Chelsea is one of those rare goals where I can remember exactly where I was – on a bus packed to the elbows on the way back from Nice vs PSG and watching on my mate’s phone.

Story time: It was late, the home fans were utterly despondent after a 3-0 tonking and they got the fright of their lives when someone (me) broke the depressed silence with a shriek of triumph.

After apologising for almost giving a nice old French lady a cardiac arrest, I watched the replay as Sturridge caught everybody by surprise with an absolute screamer to earn Liverpool a deserved draw (and keep our unbeaten season intact, at the time). What a goal. What a moment. The Nice fans probably thought ‘quel branleur’.

They gave me a disapproving stare, but I didn’t care. Great goals are more about how they go in, they’re about how they make you feel. This one felt pretty good.

Jackson Cole (Staff Writer)

Salah has scored many classics at Liverpool but this one is probably his best and it’s also the best goal of the 2018/19 season.

He had absolutely no right to score from there but Salah’s long-distance effort out wide flew into the top corner beyond the despairing Kepa Arrizabalaga, who’s the world’s most expensive goalkeeper by the way…

Given the England international has a reputation for shanking shots into the crowd from range, this stunner is well worth the award.

His wonderful technique, with the ball dropping steeply, was great from every angle and the pace of the strike has Ederson beaten before he even dives towards it.

It’s an incredibly difficult shot executed with perfection against the Premier League‘s best goalkeeper.

Jake Bacon (Staff Writer)

While Vincent Kompany’s unbelievable strike put Man City on their way to retaining the Premier League title, for technique and execution, I can’t look past Andros Townsend.

No one expected Palace to get anything at the Etihad, but Townsend’s superb 30-yard volley played a crucial part in a brilliant win. It has to be up there for one of the best goals in Premier League history.
