Manchester City ‘face potential Champions League ban’ over alleged Financial Fair Play breaches

Investigators into Manchester City’s alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations are pushing for a one-year suspension from the Champions League, according to reports.

Allegations that City, who were crowned Premier League champions on Sunday, broke financial rules in 2015 came to light last year due to documents published by Football Leaks.

The latest development comes days after Man City secured back-to-back Premier League titles

The articles included emails from club executives which suggested a sponsorship deal worth almost £60million was paid by the club’s owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, rather than Etihad Airways.

City have previously broken FFP regulations and were fined by UEFA for doing so, and it has long been reported a second breach could lead to harsher sanctions.

According to the New York Times, the sanction could be a ban from the Champions League.

UEFA’s independent club financial control body, who are investigating the allegations of wrongdoing, are to put forward their findings to the governing body’s adjudicatory chamber over the coming weeks. The report claims they are recommending a suspension from Europe’s elite football competition for at least one season.

Should a ban be confirmed as Manchester City’s punishment, the club would be allowed to appeal and could also take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. There is little chance any ban would come into effect for next season.

City insist they are cooperating with the investigation and said in a statement the New York Times report is ‘concerning’.

“Manchester City FC is fully co-operating in good faith with the CFCB IC’s (club financial control body investigatory chamber) ongoing investigation,” the statement read.

“In doing so the club is reliant on both the CFCB IC’s independence and commitment to due process; and on UEFA’s commitment of March 7 that it ‘…will make no further comment on the matter while the investigation is ongoing’.

“The New York Times report citing ‘people familiar with the case’ is therefore extremely concerning.

“The implications are that either Manchester City’s good faith in the CFCB IC is misplaced or the CFCB IC process is being misrepresented by individuals intent on damaging the club’s reputation and its commercial interests. Or both.”

As well as the ongoing investigation by UEFA, City are also being looked into by the Premier League, the FA and FIFA.

The Premier League are investigating potential breaches of the regulations concerning signing academy players and third-party ownership, the FA are looking into a payment allegedly made to Jadon Sancho’s agent when he signed from Watford in 2015, while FIFA’s inquiry centres on the signing of eight players from outside Britain who joined City before their 18th birthdays.

Jose Mourinho has dropped from 66/1 to 14/1 for the Celtic job

A flurry of bets on Sunday saw the price tumble on the 56-year-old, who has been out of management since December.

After leading Manchester United to their worst ever Premier League start, Mourinho was sacked and eventually replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But now, it appears as though he could be set for a sensational return to club management in the Scottish Premiership.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: â€Å“Jose Mourinho and Celtic may not seem like a natural partnership, but the Bhoys do have recent experience in coaches with humongous egos.

  • David Moyes – 14/1

  • Steve Clarke – 14/1

â€Å“And, actually, both parties have pretty strong links with Champions League success in Portugal.

â€Å“It could be viewed as an odd move for Mourinho but, having been linked himself with the jobs at PSG and Bayern, Celtic would fit with apparent approach of targeting one-club leagues.”

The bookies believe current boss Neil Lennon will stay with the reigning champions beyond the end of the season after taking over following Brendan Rodgers’ move to Leicester City. But there are a host of top-class alternatives reportedly in the running.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez and Belgium coach Roberto Martinez are also in consideration for the top job, with David Moyes and Steve Clarke in with an outside shot.

The Bhoys are currently nine points clear of Rangers in second spot as they look to wrap up an eighth title in a row.

Lennon’s side will also face off against Hearts at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Final in the season’s finale, where they could wrap up their third treble in a row.

Arsenal started planning bus parade for Europa League final victory before even playing quarter-finals

Arsenal started preparing for a potential Europa League victory parade before they even booked their place in the final.

The Gunners take on London rivals Chelsea in the Baku showpiece later this month, hoping to claim both silverware and a place in next season’s Champions League that final success guarantees.

Unai Emery’s side made it past BATE Borisov, Rennes, Napoli and Valencia to reach the final, and club officials started looking into a potential bus parade while the Gunners were still midway through their knockout campaign.

Arsenal have previously held bus parades, and they’ve planned one for potential Europa League success

The Daily Mail claim emails exchanged between Arsenal and Islington Council earlier this year concerned a parade should Arsenal win the Europa League, with one reading: “Whilst there is still a long way to go and much to plan, in principle, could you support an event?”

The first communications are said to have taken place on March 6, the day BEFORE Arsenal lost 3-1 in Rennes in the first leg of their round of 16 fixture.

A council member is reported to have agreed to a potential parade the following day.

Arsenal completed a comeback victory over Rennes the week after the first leg defeat, before going on to beat Napoli and Valencia without losing another match to book their place in the final.

“We are all excited to be in the UEFA Europa League final and obviously have to make all the necessary preparations to celebrate with our fans should we lift the trophy,” a club spokesperson said. “This includes contingency planning with Islington Council around possible road closures and safety arrangements.”

Arsenal and Chelsea have been left frustrated at UEFA’s lowly ticket allocation for the final, with each club set to have just 6,000 fans at the 68,700-capacity Baku Olympic Stadium.

Liverpool news: Joe Gomez returns to training after three months out with broken leg

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has returned to training after three months on the sidelines with a broken leg.

The centre-back, 21, was enjoying a superb season for the Reds before he sustained the injury against Burnley in December.

Gomez is back in Liverpool training

In the 13 Premier League matches the Englishmen started this term, Liverpool conceded just four goals.

And Anfield chief Jurgen Klopp has admitted he will not rush the Gomez back into the fold.

He said: “Joe was out for 15 weeks. That’s long, so he needs to now create the basis again for the rest of the season.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain could be back soon for Klopp’s men

Oxlade-Chamberlain could be back soon for Klopp’s men

Klopp has also confirmed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could return to first-team training soon.

The midfielder has not featured this season after damaging his cruciate knee ligament last April.

“We’re careful of course,” Klopp said. “He is working, he is doing a lot and I think will be in training in a week again. Then he will be fine.”

Liverpool are currently one point ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table with two months to go, although Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

They are next in action against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.
