Neil Warnock blasts ‘criminal’ letdown from officials as Cardiff manager is involved in stand-off at full-time after Chelsea loss

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock expressed his fury as he engaged in a bizarre stand-off with match officials after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

Victor Camarasa’s strike appeared to have put the home team on the path to victory, however it slipped away in the 84th minute as Cesar Azpilicueta bagged an equaliser which replays later showed to be offside.

Then, six minutes later, Ruben Loftus-Cheek headed home to snatch all three points for the visitors.

On the touchline, Warnock lost his cool as he bellowed at various match officials and the opposition manager.

When the full-time whistle blew, he marched towards the referee and his assistants in the middle of the pitch and stood silently, staring at them with his hands on his head, then on his hips.

They eventually walked past him and left the field.

Warnock initially told media outlets he needed to take some time before giving post-fight interviews.

He eventually told talkSPORT’s Laurence Mora: “I’ve seen some of the decisions that those teams [relegation rivals] have had over the last few weeks.

“They’ve all had incredible decisions go their way, we don’t seem to get any.

“I don’t know, must be me – payback for me over the years, eh?

David Luiz also incurred Warnock’s wrath

“It’s almost like now, no matter what opposition we play, it’s who’s in charge of the referee and who’s on the line really that’s important.

“I’m absolutely rock-bottom tonight because we didn’t deserve that.

“It’s as good as we’ve played this season against a top club and it feels criminal to be let down like that.”

When asked for a breakdown of his grievances, the Cardiff manager replied: “I think Craig Pawson’s one of our best referees if I’m honest, I just think he’s not given major decisions for whatever reason.

“I thought it could’ve quite easily been a red card at the end for Rudiger as well.

“I thought Morrison’s penalty in the first half was an obvious one. Second half, 53rd minute Rudiger pulls his shirt, he’s in a great position.

“I don’t understand why we can’t get these decisions and then to get punished like we have, I mean it’s a cruel game, isn’t it really? It hurts tonight.”

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told The Herald that he doesn't think Borna Barisic and Eros Grezda have really taken his words on board. After playing against Osijek in the qualifiers for the Europa League, Rangers swooped to snap up left back Barisic, who impressed in the two-legged tie.

Asamoah Gyan quits Ghana national team weeks before Africa Cup of Nations due to captaincy

Asamoah Gyan has retired from international football just a month before the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer released a statement on Monday about his decision to quit saying it was over the captaincy.

He is likely to be replaced as Black Stars captain by Andre Ayew for the tournament in Egypt.

“If the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team (squad) of the tournament, I wish to recuse myself from the tournament,” Gyan said in a statement.

“I also wish to retire from the national team permanently.”

The 33-year-old has scored 51 times for Ghana in 106 matches and has played in three World Cups.

He is also the top African goalscorer in the history of the tournament with six.

Gyan has also featured in seven Africa Cup of Nations helping Ghana to a third-place finish in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.

The striker has not featured for his country since September 2017 due to persistent injury problems.

He has also struggled for game time with Turkish club, Kayserispor, this season with just seven Super Lig appearances and one goal.

Gyan spent two years at Sunderland between 2010 and 2012, scoring 10 goals in 34 Premier League games before leaving for Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

“Look, I’m going to be honest here, it was the money,” he told FourFourTwo in 2019. “It was too good to turn down but a hidden detail is that Sunderland accepted a £7m loan offer for me from Al Ain before even informing me,” he explained.

“Then they decided to convince me that the money was very good for a short loan and that the club needed the money. I was enjoying my football but Al Ain offered me wages that instantly made me the best-paid footballer in Africa. I couldn’t resist.

“Pray you never be put in such a situation. It changed everything and I just had to take it and leave it. I don’t regret it though because it made me who I am now. I enjoyed playing at Al Ain, I stayed for four seasons, and it changed my life financially forever.”

Kevin De Bruyne reveals he met his wife after sliding into her Twitter DMs during Chelsea loan spell

Kevin De Bruyne revealed he met his future wife after sending her a direct message on Twitter.

The Manchester City ace is considered one of the best midfielders in the world and is leading Pep Guardiola’s men to an unprecedented quadruple.

However, before finding fame, the Belgium international was admittedly introverted and even struggles to form close bonds with his teammates.

Although he is firm friends with Raheem Sterling now (despite thinking he was a ‘d******d’ at first) the 27-year-old  admits he owes much of his newfound confidence after sliding into his future wife’s DMs while on loan from Chelsea.

“Everything changed then,” De Bruyne told the Player’s Tribune. “But not just because of football. It was also because I had my (future) wife by my side.

“She helped me grow in ways that I’ve probably never expressed out loud — even to her. This is such an embarrassing story that I hesitate to tell it! But since I promised you honesty, then I guess I have to. And it’s pretty funny, anyway.

“It started with a tweet. I only had a few thousand followers at the time, because I was still on loan at Werder Bremen. So I tweeted something about a match or whatever, and this pretty girl favorited it.

“I was single at the time, and my friend noticed it. So he said, ‘She looks like a nice girl, no? You should send her a message.’

“And I literally said to him, ‘No, no, no. Come on. People don’t like me. They don’t get me. She won’t respond.’

“So he grabbed my phone and started tapping out a message. He showed me the phone and said, ‘Come on, can I hit send?’

“I was probably on the floor, cringing, but for some reason I said, ‘O.K. fine, send it.’

“Says it all, no? I’m supposed to be this big footballer, and I didn’t even have the heart to slide into my future wife’s DMs! I didn’t dare!

“But thankfully, he sent the message for me, and she responded. We got to know each other over text for a few months. It’s a lot easier for me once I get to know someone, so after that, I was good. It really was a beautiful thing.

“She changed my life in so many ways. Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without her.

He refused to comment about his future following the game, but Strachan has emerged as the surprise favourite to take back his old job.

De Ligt is on course to captain Ajax to a first Eredivisie title in five years as they lead PSV by three points with one game to go.

Barcelona, who have already signed Frenkie De Jong from the Dutch giants, are favourites to sign the £75million-rated defender this summer, but when asked about Barca’s interest, De Ligt said: “I don’t know yet.

“There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement.”

De Ligt also starred for Ajax in their Champions League campaign which saw them knock out holders Real Madrid and Juventus and were seconds away from earning a place in the Champions League final, but fell short against Tottenham in the semi-finals.

Ajax director of football Edwin van de Sar believes the Netherlands international will move to England or Spain before the start of next season.

He said: “I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high.

“He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club. I think he’ll go to England or Spain.”

He has played 15 times for his country so far, partnering Liverpool stopper Virgil van Dijk and former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot, who won 22 caps for the Netherlands, told talkSPORT the Reds will sign him if they are clever.

Lee Bowyer believes potential buyers will be more interested in Charlton following their promotion back to the Championship

Lee Bowyer believes potential buyers will be more interested in Charlton following their promotion back to the Championship

Lee Bowyer believes Charlton’s Championship promotion could be the catalyst for new ownership at The Valley.

Captain Patrick Bauer’s scrambled last-gasp goal saw Charlton sink Sunderland 2-1 in Sunday’s League One play-off final at Wembley.

Charlton will play in the second tier of English football next season

The Addicks are now back in English football’s second tier for the first time in four years, leaving Bowyer confident promotion will help current owner Roland Duchatelet’s bid to sell the club.

“You see how many fans were there; this is a great football club,” said Charlton boss Bowyer. “And I can’t understand why no one’s bought it, if I’m honest, even before now.

“But now we’re in the Championship, it’s even more attractive.

“If I were looking to buy a football club, it’s in London, you’ve got the fan base.

“So I think there will be more people interested in it now, especially being one league away from the Premier League.”

Charlton’s big day started in disaster when defender Naby Sarr watched on in horror as goalkeeper Dillon Phillips failed to control his back-pass with the ball rolling into the net.

Bowyer’s men forced themselves to settle however, eventually levelling through Ben Purrington’s neat finish after a fine Lyle Taylor cross.

And just when the clash appeared headed for extra time, up popped centre-back Bauer with the added-time winner to send the 36,000-plus Charlton fans into delirium.

Phillips recovered from his error just like Charlton as a group, leaving Bowyer to praise his goalkeeper’s composure.

“It’s just one of those things, it’s just a mistake,” said Bowyer.

“The trouble is if a goalie makes a mistake it’s normally a goal. That’s part of the game.

Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips was praised for regaining his composure

“That will make him stronger as a person.

“There’s nowhere for him to go, nowhere to hide. You have to grab it.

“A lot of those young lads have had to become men, to come from behind against a good Sunderland side.

“They had to pull together but they’ve been doing it all season. They are a special group, they are heroes to many people now.”

Bowyer so nearly shunned football altogether after his retirement, taking an extended hiatus from the sport.

The famously hotheaded midfielder has reinvented himself as a calmer managerial presence however, admitting he is now hungry for more success with Charlton.

“I’m my own man, but I was fortunate enough to play under some great managers and great players,” said Bowyer.

“I’ve taken bits and bobs from all of them. I’d be silly not to.

“Some players need an arm around them, give them a cuddle and tell them how good they are.

“Others need a kick up the backside and to be told it’s not good enough.

“How you make the players feel every day, that alone is the most important part of management. And Sir Bobby Robson, he was unreal at that.”

Sunderland’s seventh consecutive Wembley loss hit the Black Cats hard, especially off the back of last month’s EFL Trophy final defeat on penalties.

Manager Jack Ross insisted, though, that once the disappointments fade, he will pick up that bid to guide Sunderland back to the Championship.

“I came here to take the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking,” said Ross. “I’ll carry that disappointment for myself.

“I came here with that ambition and I was clear about it.

“I’ll continue to do that as long as I have the opportunity to do so.”
