Neymar has been stripped of the Brazil captaincy for next month’s Copa America following a series of controversies and been replaced by Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Dani Alves.
Eight months after he was given the role, Neymar was informed by manager Tite on Saturday, that he would no longer be captain of the five-time world champions.
Instead, former Barcelona defender Alves, 36, will lead the team when they take on Bolivia in the opening match in Sao Paulo before facing Venezuela and Peru, as they bid to win the competition for the first time since 2007.
The 107-cap right back, who has worn the armband on four previous occasions, will do so as well for friendlies against Qatar and Honduras.
‘Daniel Alves will be captain of the Brazilian national team in the friendly matches against Qatar and Honduras and in Copa America Brazil 2019,’ the country’s football federation (CBF) said in a statement.
