The news will delight many connected to the club, after United players past and present called for the Old Trafford legend to be given the job on a full-time basis.

And former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has also praised the move, saying it comes at the perfect time as the new boss can now plan for a pivotal summer transfer window.

Speaking on Thursday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the Welshman said: “For Solskjaer now, it makes such a difference.

“He had no power whatsoever until today, but now they’ve just given him the power to sign players.

“Now he can say to players, ‘I’m building something for the next three years and I want you to come play for me’.

“He deserves it.”
